I was planning to make this 3D and in UDK within the next 15 weeks. I plan on going for a realistic look. I may do some experimenting with stylized textures.
I say work on realism first. If you can simulate realism well, then stylized comes second nature. The idea is how can you exaggerate something you can't recreate. From my experience anyways.
I would like to see it stylized just because I love stylized work. I dig the concept some great stuff going on there. I would love to see some wear and tear here and there, some sag to the walkways, a few boards cut to different lengths or depths. Maybe some more signs of life and use, clay jars or pots, maybe totems carved on top of the support posts?
Wester I kind of think its the reverse buddy? Just about anyone can slap a photo texture on something and get it looking pretty realistic but they might not be able to create hand painted stylized textures. They might also struggle with lighting and composition which are skills most people who can hand paint textures, have.

Some recent threads that could help. There are more about hand painting textures but I don't have them bookmarked, a google search pointed at polycount could probably turn up a lot more.
