good day to you all, my name is fen, first time poster and first time contest participant. Ive gone through the thread and think most of the models coming out of the community is fantastic and decided i want to atleast have a go myself, being in my second year in games design at college and moving on to uni this september (and with tf2 being one of my favourite games.) Ive already drawn up concepts for my pyro ideas and even begun modelling my idea for a new flamethrower, however this is where ive hit a snag. Being completely new to forums in general, i have yet to understand how to get my renders and scans from my comp to here. i used to use photobucket links but it would always mess up the size and quality. so any help here would be greatly appreciated!
so for the mean time ill leave you with my general concepts i have at the moment...

primary weapon- 3 barrelled flamethrower (i am currently modelling this)
secondary weapon- bag o' glass
melee weapon- a combination of a thermometre and a knife

now i have read the guidelines and extra forums about how i SHOULD NOT go about creating new gameplay mechanics for the contest but instead focus on the art. However i disagree with this rule and i would just like to quickly share my oppinions why. TF2 has been a fantastic game for its constant updates which with the rare occurance make the game unbalanced. with new weapons should always come new gameplay mechanics. Being a reader of the steam forums ive found that many of the community items are found to be a bit gimmicky just thrown in just for the sake. while i think these items are excellantly designed and look superb in game, they really dont shine out like weapons such as the backburner or direct hit. so for my weapons i will try to design new mechanics around them. even if my ideas do not win, i will atleast have the self satisfaction that i can be creative as an overall games designer aswell as an artist.

now i read somewhere that the best way to get noticed on these forums is to have more art and less words, and i realised i have talked way too much, so until someone helps me with how to upload pictures i shall continue to model my flamethrower. thank you very much and good day

I use http://omploader.org/ for my screengrabs and other quick images, for long term I would suggest a more permanent solution like photobucket of flickr.

Otherwise you can just add images as attachments underneath the main text in advances reply (click "manage attachments")

    best of luck

thank you very much. i did not know this site had its own attachment option. so since ive been working on a few ideas here are my first batch of ideas.

relating to the whole firey aspect of the pyro one of my first items i came up with was combining an industrial thermostat with a knife/ dagger, which i aptly named thermostab.

the second being the flamethrower, which i conceptulized by asking myself "whats cooler than a flamethrower?" i replied to myself "more flamethrowers" so i looked through the current flamethrower to see how it was built and this is the result mock up so far. any criticism/ help would be greatly appreciated.

(apologies if the renders have not attached haha)

It would be best if you use [img][/img] tags for the pictures. Upload them somewhere for it.

Sorry if I missed the post above yours about it, just pointing that out on first observation.

Imgur.com is a good free image sharing site. http://imgur.com/

I like the idea of the three headed flamethrower. Reminds me of old myths about multi headed dragons like the Hydra.

I'm surprised no one has done an industrial thermometer before now that you suggest it. It fits perfectly. Maybe you could put graphics of a couple of the different classes on the gage the same way there are pictures of different animals on some real meat thermometers showing the temperature needed to cook well. Heres a ref-

    What is your theme?

i really like the name hydra. that is a fantastic name for what i am going for. the theme i was going with was home made, i was getting my ideas by writing a little story in my head about how much time the pyro spends around the engineer (due to protecting sentry nests.) so i got the impression after time the pyro would like to have a go at making his own weapons. after breakfast ill be working on the thermostab more (finish the uv unwrap) then begin texturing. i may need a bit of help with that tbh as i know how to set up alpha channels for opacity maps, but not for specular maps. also ill keep in mind about the thermostat class pictures, it sounds like a good idea but with the small ammount of space i have on the dial i dont think id get enough detail into the 9 classes to make it obvious. thank you all for your help so far.
  • Khthon
The dial could be SERIOUSLY exaggerated and oversized if you wanted to and still be right at home in TF2.
  • fen
it could but my main concern on how much vision it would block the player if it were to be seriously exagerated. im just adding on an extra bit of geometry (some gaffa tape) to make it look more home made then ill finish unwrapping and begin the block texturing give me about an hour or so and ill upload my progress. thanks again =]

right well ive finished the unwrap and uv layouts here they are.

if anyone has some advice on some render settings i would gladly appreciate it. i can model, yet my render skills are in need of some work so thanks. on to the texturing stage.

EDIT well ive but the block colour in, will change accordingly to tf2 colour guide when i can. a problem ive ran into is that i dont currently have a tablet on me. so instead of waiting around doing nothing im going to model my flamethrower and hat. if anyone could tell me how to get my model into the model viewer it would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.

hey peeps just gonna start on detail modelling each section of the flamethrower. im starting off with the nozzle. im trying to make it intimidating since its what the enemies are going to be looking at. these are the basic silouettes once ive got your oppinions ill develop some details on to them. also i really like the hydra idea so thats why i threw in some dragon head shapes (like i said basic atm but if you like them il develop some more)
