Boolean extrude using B&W image

Hi all,

May sound like a bizarre question, but does anyone know if there is a tool that creates some kind of boolean extrude using a B&W image? I was thinking that the white on the image would be treated as some kind of 'mask', allowing the shape to be extruded but it would also generate vertices (therefore creating the edges of the shape) much like a boolean operation?

Hope that doesnt sound too confusing...... :S

Are you looking to do this for one particular 3D package, or are you looking to see if any of them have this feature?

It is a weird question. You should post what you are actually trying to accomplish, there may be a better way to do it.

You could try a displacement map. I forget the name offhand, but Maya has a function to convert images to polygons.

Neither of these really make clean geometry, are you wanting to take a shortcut from a piece of concept art?
