Yeah, I made a noobish mistake when I was making it... I mistook 'faces' for 'tris', and when all of my 4 sided faces (which WERE under 800) were split into tris, they added to a number much higher than 800 (almost double)... Luckily, they accepted it anyway, but I'm going to be a lot more careful about that from now on. The hat I'm working on now is actually just under 800, so I'm already learning to budget better.
I'll be working on a '60s Australian ski theme for the (you guessed it) Sniper. Will work on a historical Napoleon-honoring theme for the Spy if/when I finish the sniper. ORIGINAL IDEA DO NOT STEAL.
Already did, RT. Started preliminary work on my Maya Spy in a thread early on, but then I figured out that I should make the Sniper first because A) I suck at Maya, and it will take MUCH longer, I have ore of a chance of winning with Blender, and C) I actually know what all I'm doing with the sniper.
I'm personally wondering, what are the reasoning some people have behind their themes :O?
I feel people come up with way too farfetched or irrelevant themes sometimes.
I mean, I can understand things that are very obviously related to the character, like a Fireman theme for Pyro, a hunter theme for Sniper, and the Soldier survival kit for... yeah...
However I don't quite see the reasoning behind the people who gives the Scout an english police officer theme, the Pyro a Pilot theme, and a Moby Dick theme for Sniper :O

Because poeple thinks randomness = silly, thus if TF2 = silly, TF2 = random
Which I really disagree on, also poeple should stick to the characters personalities instead of contrasting them with out of character stuff (example: a cute little bear hat on the heavy).
The thing is that far fetched theme are obviously to be expected since each of the 9 classes have their own distinct personality and behavior which limit the amount of themes one can afford without getting it out of character.
That's also why lots of idea gets repeated over and over, ex: pilot theme, cook theme, pirate theme. I've seen a lot of duplicate models been sent to the contribute system also, the problem being, that poeple dont do their research to see if anyone has done it before.
Yeah but that most likely means that there will be a winner for each class.
I think if Valve really likes your stuff, but maybe only 2 of the 3 items, then you might not win but you might end up having your stuff pop up next time around.
I wonder how many submissions they have so far. I'm betting it's more than a few thousand.
I kinda find it ironic that someone gets paid to take stuff that we make for them for free
Not that I mind really, seeing the items you make ingame is worth way much for me
i cant remember if it was just me being a bit crazy but didn't they at first say they may send a dollar or 2 the modelers way, that got accepted. I may have been a bit drunk the night i first saw the contribution site.
I just found a great blog with some very unique blade weapons, here's the link, pass it along. I've got to go now, I'll update the main page when I get back.

It's fixed now, I'm just about to add the newest threads but let me say something before that. To everyone doing brass knuckels for the Heavy, I think I got something more original.
Anyone know the exact specifics of the contest? Will only 1 entry be selected, or will there be 1 per class? There are so many entries that deserve to be included.
For the animations, how does valve want me to submit them? I never really understood the way the uploading procedure goes, or the way im supposed to organize my files. Can someone explain how to properly submit an item with animations in detail? thank you.

I bieleve simply sending the animations and pointing out for what weapon/model it is for would be ok, since they have to recompile the model with the submitted animations anyway.
I personally am wondering when someone's going to do an Uncle Sam hat, American Flag melee, and Applepie lunchbox item for Heavy.
Considering how many people think the "Heavy loves America because he has 2 items with relations to America" fan-canon is enough to justify themes that turn the Heavy into a red, white and blue blooded American.
the line doesnt look like a smoothing group thing, it looks more like a couple of very long polygons next to each other. also I dont think you will see that in game.
Idea for Spy:
A Ballistic knife: It's much weaker than the regular knife, but a backstab can be achieved from a safer distance than the regular knife.
The HONEYPOT: It replaces the disguise kit. It allows you to have a chance at not losing your disguise when attacked. However, since it is such a convincing disguise, any sentries your team's built attack you as well. So, you need to make sure to activate this once you're in enemy territory.
I really liked these ideas, but I have no knowledge of modeling or anything to make these come to life.
what themes are you adding?
would I be able to say hoist my flag on the continent of "professional finisher" witht he Sniper?
claim it as my own because the Sniper needs my fancy .475 pistol to finish people off, not to forget the wilderness survival knife or just piker. Fancy Silenced Rifle too. http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73970
My personal goal was to learn basic modeling, texturing and compiling. Which I think I've succeeded with, so all in all I'm already pleased with my results in this competition.
Now I need to find a way to incorporate this newfound skill in my tf2 maps
There's a lot of quality work on this forum, and I think some of the stuff is just stunning. Good job everyone.

I also got a link for a list of canon TF2 companies at the bottom, you might wanna take a look at that.

Theme is self explanatory.
Just wanted to throw mine up here: a Thor-inspired-spoof-theme. Haven't come up with a witty name for it, But I will!!

Also, ******* ski straps, how do they work?

mat_reloadmaterial "models/weapons". I think it requires sv_cheats 1 too.

or you could just use the sdk's model viewer and hit f5.
Could prove very useful!
Although, as there are SOOO many submissions it is bery likely that you will miss a few

Any good general rules to follow to resolve this kind of issue?

keeping in mind we need to wait a week to find out the results
I finally got all my stuff turned in about an hour ago. Getting everything completely organized was a pain, but it was worth going to the trouble.
