I have been mock modeling tf2 weapons for a while and since the announcement of the contest I have decided to try and make real items. That said, I am first going to learn to export a working prop in blender. It will be a while before many updates come up. I will tell you what I have in mind though...
I am planning on doing the Soldier and the theme will be samurai. The weapons I have planned on are a katana for melee, a gunboots replacement, and a misc shoulder pad.

Also, your blade is the wrong shape entirely, you want a constant gradual curve not a straight stick that then curves sharply backward three inches past the guard. It's not the right shape for a wakizashi if you're going for a short sword, and it's too short for a katana. Look at some pics of real japanese swords and you'll see immediately what I mean.

going to import the katana into garrysmod, but having trouble with my comp. Don't know why so I am going to get to the bottom of that before I continue on the modeling.
The blade itself is too thick as well, even by the standards of Team Fortress 2 exaggeration. It's getting to axe-bit thickness. It's closer to right up at the top, but for some reason around the middle it's very large.
Unless you plan to lengthen it, it's around the proportions of a kodachi or a long wakizashi, meaning you should reshape the grip of the sword as well.
The pauldron looks good. Should make for a nice misc. item or buff banner replacement.
second I am going to thin the blade and lengthen it out a bit but keep a tf2 proportion for the tsuba.
third I am going to work with the handle and finish the model with a subdivide.
fourth the shoulder will be misc, and please will someone choose one!
