Greeting - i am finally getting active and on line. This contest is just to cool and has drawn me out of hiding. Hopefully it will entice me to become an active member. Thank you to Spetch, Graph and Oobersli for getting me off my butt and encouraging me to post.
DISCLAIMER: Here are my UGLY concepts. i know they are ugly and i can do better. However when i am coming up with something from nothing i like them this way. It is like a stream of artistic consciousness. I churn them out short and quick with one hand surfing for reference and the other on my drawing pad scratching forms and shapes i like. Then i set them down for a day or two so when i come back to model them i go "what the heck was i thinking there?!" I then start filling in those details forcing me to be creatively again. it is like two boost of creativity for the price of one.
Character class:
Engine
Code named: "
Mix and Match" till i come up with a better name
The monkey wrench (melee weapon replacement) -
possible names: Monkitron, Robosappen, Sappenwrench, Monkey wrench
Idea:
builds things 25% faster and delivers 25% more metal per swing. 50% less melee damage.
thanks for all the input and encouragement. the mods must have been asleep since it was several hours after my temp new guy ban was lifted and i had given up checking for any comments. oh well. here is the "final" mesh. got the UVs done to. Dropped the LED eyes in favor of screws and angeled up the whole thing to give it a more tool machined tool look. After i am done texturing i plan on skewing everything a bit. Cant' wait to texture, but got to finish the other models first... i really like the cymbals monkey idea (thanks that is really awesome idea). However i went too much with the pipe wrench theme. still there is still time for another redesign. hmmmm

Here's what I had planned originally (feel free to use this idea, since you beat me to the punch)...
I was going to call it the Theivin' Varmint, and it would steal ammo from any enemy it hit, and convert it into metal for the engineer. The amount would be up to Valve, naturally.
Anyhow, keep up the good work!

The power stapler (pistol weapon replacement) -
possible names: stapalier, staple pistol, Swingline of death
Idea: is able to damage sappers. 25% less damage.
-alternate-
staples sticks slow player. more inaccurate and 25% less damage
Then again I haven't seen it alongside the rest of Engies stuff yet, so I wouldn't know.
To be honest I prefer the earlier version for this reason anyway, even if the newer one does fit in with TF2.
I love the concept.
The pneumatic shotgun (shotgun weapon replacement) -
possible names: old ruff and tumble, hammer shot, hammer time
Idea: jack hammer bit goes in and out (like a jack hammer does) doing melee damage per hit starting off slow ramping up getting faster. After a 5 second time frame max pressure is reached and bit is launched off as a single solid projectile. weapon cannot be reloaded, player must wait for pressure to build back up (cool down time like the base ball or jaratie)
(assume for both images they will be color coded for each team)
okay the wrench had the most input so i did a quick texture since the UVs were done and several paint overs changing forms and reducing detail. now awaiting feed back.
1.2.3.4.
(assume for the image will be color coded for each team)
Dude that is brilliant! Best wrench so far . I think the painted one is pretty much perfect with only 2 exceptions, I would drop the spikes on his head and the thin little screws in the front.
came up with theme title: Not without my tools!
also came up with the idea of reworking the front of the shotgun where the hammer actually hits the firing pin on a shotgun cartage... probably just model it instead of concepting it.
Also remember that streamlining a lot of the details is totally fine because TF2 has a lot of deco to it.
which TF2 company did you think would work? i didn't see any that didn't say mining equipment or beer to me.
Still think you could trim down on the extraneous nuts and bolts sticking out everywhere though. Lovely model otherwise.

I think it was better with the battery IMO I could see him stapling your face to a wall, but not pushing papers.
Which is why he turned his stapler into a gun, he clearly didm't need it.
whoops. logo was just mirroring things over in a rush and did not checking UVs. fixed that (good catch Galago - thanks)

Engineer has 11 science PhDs, I doubt he's "not organized in the slightest".
Not to mention how there's stacks of papers in the background as well as a lot of blueprints, I wouldn't be surprised to see Engineer using a stapler with those. Workshops aren't usually that highly organized anyway, especially not when they have that many items and inventions in them.
Perhaps he could make a new company logo called "Milton Staplers", at least for RED :O
awesome idea, and so it shall be done!
cut about 2000 off the shotgun, UV'ed and did a quick color block out pass on it for color and effect.
comment away, i may actually hit 3 pages.
