TF2 - Polypack - Spazzo

Hi folks.

while originally I was going to go with soldier, that changed to spy when I couldn't think up enough items to go with the theme.

for the theme it will be that of a collector of sorts, so I will be using mostly older weapons as a basis for what I make.

Knife WIP: heartbreaker.jpg

current polygon count is 2314.

alright, here is the meat tenderizer,
    tenderizer.jpg

2126 triangles at the moment, seems fine compared to the original shovel being 3140 triangles
  • Mizzymizzy
Is the meat tenderizer going to be made out of wood? (I'm not a cooking person but I've only seen them made of wood)
  • Spazzo
right now I'm planning on having the handle made out of either plastic or metal - if metal I'll redo it to make it seamless, and the actual smashing bit will be metal.

expect to see an updated version of the tenderizer sometime tomorrow.

oh, and some ideas floating in my head for names.

Potato Launcher - The Master Chef(geddit?)
Tenderizer - still thinking on this one. Tenderizer does sound nice, but a bit plain and unexciting.

if it were possible to create entirely new functioning weapons I'd have a second slotted weapon already in my head. got the idea of some can of soups that would somehow buff the solly.
  • Vitius
Not looking bad, but since you're still well under the poly limit I would recommend trying to add a little more detail. Maybe a slightly more detailed handle or chips/cracks on the head.
  • Spazzo
yeah, well under the limit, I will be adding in more detail, that is for certain. planning on adding in chips and that out of it, I think I'll add more detain into the handle for starters.

I'll post up another screenshot tonight if I can get it looking better, with more angles too.

Frying pan was done by someone already, just a heads up. Not sure how the cooking thing ties into the soldier, and someone is already doing a Heavy cooking pack and has a chef hat and oven mitts modeled. Just a heads up.
  • EvilShadow777
Frying pan has been done, on several occasions I believe, not just for the Soldier though. However, you'll be competing with some very professional models, most especially if Royzo submitted his. Keep in mind, 1 item per slot, that rules kinda buried in the list but it's in there.
  • Spazzo
yeah, I'm aware of the rules.

and I'm also trying to think of other things that might suit the soldier over this, but can't think of anything really.

the idea behind the whole cooking was actually stemmed from the fact that the soldier made his own medals - as such, I figure the soldier could have possibly made an impromptu rocket launcher, not exactly stable I know.

then in the war comics it was featured that the soldier likes ribs - so I then thought up the frying pan and the meat tenderizer. these I think are more stable than the potato launcher. not to mention easier to think up a stable design for, and the reason I eventually decided on a meat tenderizer was that I figured a frying pan would have already been done, and I like the idea of the tenderizer more.

This reminds me, I can't model at all but I knew if I were to enter this contest I wanted to do something with a kitchen theme. Then I realized too much was done to get away with that, so I went broader. A homemade theme.

Here's a few ideas if you feel like using them:
Misc. - Trash Can Lid Shoulder Pads
Secondary (Buff Banner) - Cabinet with a radio antenna that comes out through a hole in the top with a muffin mitt for a flag attatched
    Melee - Yard Rake/Hoe/Steel Pipe/ect.

This would look great with the stainless steel pot.
  • Spazzo
all right, meat tenderizer has turned into a single contribute item - I can't think of anything drastic enough to suit the rest of the class without it basically being untellable from the normal items. I know I could just do a misc and a hat, but I'd prefer to do an item for each weapon slot.

so, now I've decided on something that'll work perfectly. a spy kit. will be replacing the ambassador(as in something will be made with the same functionality as the ambassador), the knife and a hat.

hopefully can get something posted up tonight. going to work on the hat for starters.

EDIT1:just so I can say I've posted something, here is the hat I'm working.
    http://yfrog.com/1xphonehatj

I'm not sure what I'll make the base of it to put on the spies head with - I'm thinking just a simple platform, as I've already reached a polygon count of 1102. expecting to hit 1500 easy. if it goes over 2000 I'll go out of my to reduce it.

oh, and it is a dial phone, incase it wasn't obvious, and I didn't want to do a shoephone as it wasn't obvious to the people without the hat that it was a shoephone. with a simple phone, it is obvious and it sorta suits the stupidness of TF2.

DDSN HERE WITH ANOTHER FANTASTIC POST:

Make a bib. I mean, he does eat alot of ribs right? So why not make a dirty bib with the words "Rib Palace" or whatever, with plenty of sauce stains and etc.

took a bit longer than intended to get this done, but here is an untextured phonehat in xsi:
    phonehat.jpg

and then with it on the spy in hlmv.
    phonehaton.jpg

ignore the whole checkerbox texture - will be doing a texture tonight.

I'm thinking of adding a little antenna onto the back of it, because as it is the back is uninteresting.

all I'm really looking for people to tell me here is opinions on the scale of it, smaller or bigger, and should I make the dial itself more detailed, or just flat with the numbers as a texture? because as it is now it isn't good enough.

You're using XSI mod tool by the looks of your screenshots (the light text over it looks like mod tool). You should pick up blender instead as mod tool's license doesn't allow you to sell anything made in it, making all your stuff kinda useless to valve. (pl_hoodoo had several items made with it and they had to be removed before it could be sold to them and shipped)

They're free though. If they were selling these there'd be all sorts of nasty legal stuff involved. You'll be fine with your demo sotware.

There's some very sharp edges on your phone, particularly around the bottom. I'd recommend beveling a bunch of them to smooth out the shape a little. You could strip some polys out of the reciever if you don't have enough left.
  • Spazzo
alright, just got a registered version of ms3d(I've tried learning blender before - I just couldn't figure it out), and I already know full well how to use ms3d, and I figure it is worth the cost.

will be remaking the model tonight, expect a WIP within the next couple of hours once I re-familiarize myself with ms3d. will be editing it into this post.

oh, and just so I can say that I did have the ideas before someone else happens to think of them, here they are. no silhouettes or sketches though. no scanner.

Hat: Phonehat, obviously as seen before. I'm aiming for a polygon count of below 1300. will be making the cord going off of it jiggleboned. and it won't be spiraled either, just to fit in with the 50s setting of TF2.

secondary Hat(will be doing this last): a snail shell hat. due to the spy being french.

Revolver: a Fancy looking revolver(something between the ordinary revolver and the ambassador), with a scope on the side of it that looks swivelable. will be making it a comedic looking though. think of accentuated parts that shouldn't be. http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/6711/peacemaker.png

Knife: I've gotta be honest, I haven't thought of anything yet that isn't already used, like the pen knife. but that one seems to obvious.
    http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/4025/heartbreakerm.jpg

Misc item: I'd like to think of something hanging off the spies neck, that does actually look like spygear. like maybe a pair of binoculars or something? but that doesn't suit the theme.

I might end up making the hat a shoephone hat instead, in which case it'll stretch the theme into "get smart" territory.
  • Spazzo
a nearly finished knife for the spy - just need to wrap the shell around the center and it'll be just about done. then I'll do the texture.

oh, and just so you can see the reference, here: http://www.piratemerch.com/images/french_flintlock_dagger_pistol.jpg

    2314 triangle count.
  • Spazzo
just a quick update on the knife, with flat textures that aren't final decisions. I think I might go black instead of the dark muddy texture for the centre.

    misericorde.png

oh, and the name isn't final yet. still trying to decide. Misericorde is the current name, but now I see that someone else has already started with a knife with that name.

oh, and I do realise it is a dagger. so the name is even less fitting.
  • Spazzo
    not dead.

was having problems with steam over the past couple of days, which interfered with anything to do with seeing how the models works. haven't got it quite working fully yet.

anyway, the revolver replacement. I'm basing the model off of the flintlock revolers. except it won't have the whole flintlock thingo, cause it'll still have to function exactly the same as the current revolver.
    flintlock.png

and then the knife, I've made some slight adjustments to it since the last post.
    dagger.png

for the revoler I'm using this as a reference.

    dagger triangle count - 2794
    revolver triangle count - 832

I'm right now trying to decide between going with either a hat or a misc item for the third item. if hat I'd like to do something detective sorta thing, but that doesn't suit the "collector" theme.
  • Spazzo
alright, been really meaning to do some more progress on the revolver while trying to maintain its look. I think I've done alright at doing that.

need a simple yes or no to the ring at the bottom of the grip.
    theonering2.jpg
if yes then I'll add the ring to the bottom of the dagger as well.

I'm thinking I won't be able to get a third item in time. I maybe should have spent a bit more time on this.

    EDIT: updated version
