Edit: Thanks to a very close friend of mine, I now have some awesome concept drawings. Tell me what you think.
Hello all, I am a huge fan of TF2 and a new but very enthusiastic 3d Modeller. I began to learn how to use 3Ds Max at the beginning of this year, and have fallen in love with it.
I have decided to choose the
Heavy for my this competition, with the theme of the items fitting loosely around the
Soviet Union.
Looking around the other threads I can see that there is some very, very impressive competition, but I'd like to take this opportunity to increase my modelling skills and to get some tips for guys who seem to know what they're doing very well.
The first weapon I have started on, is the
Kremlin Krusher, which is a replacement for the Heavy's primary weapon. I'm not much of an artist anymore... so I went ahead and just started throwing stuff together. This is what I came up with.
It's a three barrel mini gun, with a delightful Kremlin style spire at the end of mount to remind the Heavy of his glorious home land, and to insight fear into his enemies. I know we're not necessarily meant to come up with the game play changes of the unlocks, but I thought that maybe this could be an extremely slow firing gun with a lot of push back at close range, giving the Heavy a more defensive roll, but I digress Valve can do anything they want with it if they pick it!
My next idea, although has yet to have any modelling done of it, is the
Minsk Dismemberer (Working Title). This is a replacement for the Heavy's secondary weapon, in which he has a blunderbuss meets howitzer type weapon. Again as a side Idea for game play changes, it could fire a single, slow moving round doing large splash damage at long range, but has massive fall off damage at close range, but failing that, it would look cool as just a regular shotgun.
My final idea is for the Heavy's melee weapon. It's called
The Five Year Planks. Again I have no artwork or modelling for it at this time, but I'll be aiming to have some drawings of the Minsk Dismemberer and The Five Year Planks up as soon as possible. The idea behind this weapon is to give the Heavy two wooden hand guards, one with a fetching chain and wire aesphetic, whilst the other shows off the Heavy's DIY skills with a hammer and some nails. (I'm afraid to say they are sub-par.) I hadn't really thought of any game play changes for this weapon, but I guess it could use the bleeding for the sniper weapon in the same way.
So there you have it, my three initial ideas, if anyone could give me some feedback on what you think of my alpha model for the Mini gun, or perhaps my ideas for the weapons I'm going to work on next, I'd appreciate it greatly.

And holy moly those are some huge concept pictures you got there, mind resizing them a bit?
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try and resize those images asap. I really like the idea of the twisted spire, I agree that it would look cool when it was spinning, so I may look into changing this. Do you think I could get away with basing the ammo box for my mini gun on current one, being a large drum?
Thanks for the reply, but how do you mean?
... Thanks for the 'Constructive' Criticism.
It's meant to be a St. Basil Tower from on top of the Kremlin. You can see a picture of the Kremlin in all of its Oniony Glory here.
It doesn't make sense to merge kremlin architecture with a minigun, that's all.
I think it's a neat concept in theory, but in execution the tower architecture comes off somewhat awkwardly, and not immediately obvious, at least integrated into the barrel of the gun. What is the color scheme you have planned for the tower bit? The texture would probably break or make the design.
It would follow the team colour scheme, so red and white/beige for team red and blue and white/beige/yellow for team blu.
Thanks for the feedback, wouldn't really want to be known as the king of the onions.
A. Beast
B. Mannly.
Another interesting idea is to play with the kremlin notion* and have elongated onion-shaped muzzles on the end of each barrel? (kind of shaped like cartoonish old mortars)
Whatever, I dig it anyway, it looks nice and different from the normal minigun (something I found very disappointing about Natascha)
*I am aware St. Basil's and the Kremlin are not the same thing
Thanks for the feedback, again. It doesn't look like I'm going to lose this Onion Dome name now! I'll look into the things you've suggested, and try to get some screen shots up in the near future of what you've suggest too, just to see if people like it more. Thanks again!
I'm gunna add more detail to the wood to give it a more distressed look, just wanted to show you guys how it was going.
But that's the entire concept, lose that and you've got a boring old minigun.
Cant wait to see the blunderbuss.
I have to say, I really like your example. I'll play around with this idea, I love the thought of the spires being exhaust pipes.
Reemplace Shotgun.
The weapon is similas as: http://left4dead.wikia.com/wiki/Combat_Shotgun but more big, and only has 1 shoot (later need SLOW reload), but literaly RAIN shrapnel (bullets), like 3 or 4 force-a-nature, but high dispersed, more than natasha.
