TF2 - Polypack - peppington

This is the first time I have ever posted anything on a forum, and it's kind of terrifying. At the same time, now that I've popped my internet cherry, I can start getting feedback from talented people who don't live in my apartment.

So my idea is for the medic. I'm redesigning his backpack into an organ cooler. Functionality wise, I thought it would be cool if the medic could build uber by collecting the gibs on the battlefield. Heads, spleens, whatever. It would probably be a secondary weapon replacement. I think I'll also do an organ donor card as a misc. slot item to go with the organ theme.

...and using the magic of photoshop, this is where I'd like to take it...

I'm not sure i'll curve in the sides of the cooler. I think the boxiness I have now gives it it an older look, but I'm a bit worried it makes it too boring.

Any suggestions/critiques/general advice would be greatly appreciated:)

Looks too realistic and boring. Sorry this is my IMHO.
I think you need a more details like this : 10078591005271029561656.jpg

Make it more curved, without the lines on the top. For now, it looks like a beer-cooler :D

Don't listen to them. The idea of an ice chest on the back is great, especially if it has some real mod-tastic bullshit going on. Plus, the idea for its function is great too, because it gives medics a good reason to wade into combat as well instead of waiting back to build up ubers.

Artexe- No worries, I’m still working on it. I plan on adding the cross decal to the front when I texture it. I’m not sure what I’ll do to make the top of the cooler more interesting. I thought maybe an ambulance siren would work, but I’d have to add custom animations and lights and I have no idea how to do that. I might just add knobs like the medipack has now. I’ll try some things.
Fragus - I used this as a reference so it doesn’t surprise me. I thought jagermeister was fitting.

Also, I've removed the lines and am playing with the curves. I should have something to post soon.
Karkasmolenklok -Thanks! I figure it would give the medic something extra to do while he’s running around healing people.

Added the side tank and curved the edges slightly. Not sure about the ribbed tubing. I might redo it.

Maybe a view window with an organ in it? I like the idea a lot. It'd be great if you textured it to look like it was icy (little icicles?). Not sure if you can get a subtle fog particle coming off of it. For more visual interest you could add a compressor motor and some copper tubing along one of the sides?
Remember that a lot of these kinds of details could potentially be included in the gun as well to tie it all together.

The organ's not a very good idea.
The whole idea is a bit mature for the theme of he game (inb4 "it has blood and guts what do you mean not with the theme") Gathering organs is a rather mature theme for a weapon. Interesting? Yes. a little unusual however.

As I stated in the cigarette question, if that's the issue in a game where you burn people to death, throw piss on them, splatter them with explosives, decapitate them graphically, and a black guy kills people with a broken bottle as his special weapon, then I really doubt this is going to be the thing that's "too offensive" about the game.

I like the idea, of course you know it wouldnt likely have this functionality in game

I played with proportions of the cooler, changed the nitrogen tank, cleaned up some polys, and added an air conditioning unit to the base. I think I have the silhouette that I want.

Ikimono - I don't think it's too big of an issue, but I do see your point. The way I see it, the medic would only be collecting organs from the already dead, and I think they'd probably be happy to know their gibs were going to a good cause. Anyways, as Calabi stated, valve gets to decide what they do with my item if they take it.

TeriyakiStyle- I really like your texture idea. I'll see what I can do.

Well an interesting concept would be to add a vacuum to the "medigun" counterpart, so it's not a matter of just walking over the gibs, you can suck them up or atleast bring them closer to you.
  • Karkasmolenklok
Another thing to consider is that the medigun as it is currently is modeled after a modern fire hose nozzle, and it would be entirely easy to make it look like an old fashioned one

I disagree, a Medic not weilding the donor box thingie would have no usage of a gun that could suck up gibs.
Therefor it would be another "targe/sword combo", where one weapon requires another specific weapon in order to be efficient.

The tank at the side now makes it look like it's a dispenser. I don't think that was the idea you were going for but that's what it looks like now

I also see nothing but drinks coming from that tap, he's serving up gibs as refreshments for the team now? that's a little odd don't you think?

That's actually a common fixture on ice chests to let melted icewater out.

I'm not sure I'll make a organ themed medigun replacement, I like the idea of my back pack being used with the kritzkrieg or the regular uber. My third items probably going to be a bone saw replacement that looks like an old fashioned wood-coring drill.

The dial on the top of the tank is meant to be a temperature gauge. Something like this...
    bc5025_stainless_steel_thermometer.jpg
...but I see what you mean. I think it will be clearer when I texture it.

I removed the front tap, partly because of what Y_M said, and also because i felt it made the front of the cooler too busy - especially since I want to put a big medic cross on the cooler. Too bad, I liked my little tap, but I think it's better now. Maybe I'll move it to the side where the handle used to be?

    4NcgT.jpg

I'm going to make a few small tweaks to the air conditioner, but otherwise what do you guys think? What should I do with bare side of the cooler. Should I put back the handle, the tap, or leave it as is and put nothing. .... it would probably be easier if I put together all three and just let you pick. ok, something to do for tonight.

I would put a big, exaggerated vintage water spigot something like this-

  • peppington
So I suddenly realized that I have no idea how to UV unwrap something this complicated. Anybody know a good tutorial? Otherwise I'm stuck.

I liked the tap idea, but couldn't get the geometry to look right, so I left the cooler as is.

Here is likely the finished model, sans texture.Vi3xW.jpg

Sort of plain. We'll see how it looks with texture.
