There is a very large megathread called 'how do I model dem shapes!?' where if you post your problem and a ref image someone will either tell you how they would do it or even draw it out for you!
(also, I would recommend making the grip pattern in 2d using crazybump to bring out the normals.)
I like Per's idea, its pretty simple to model. The only other alternative I can think of would be to combine a pattern into your normal map there are a few ways to do this and I'm pretty sure they're all covered on the polycount wiki.

Perna's suggestion. Possibly a bevel or two thrown in depending on how sharp you want things.
