can any1 help with a quick overveiw of uvw mapping. it seems that when ever i try to apply a material it adjusts to the size of the object. how can i get it to all be the same size for tiling purposes?

To be honest I don't know what you're talking about by "apply a material"...I'm not sure you understand the unwrapping process. Have you looked at some tutorials?
1) What program? Max, Maya, Mudbox, Zbrush, Modo, Silo, Blender, Wings3D, MilkShape? If you get a little more specific then we can probably get a little more specific.
2) Most apps have some pretty extensive help files and tutorials built in, that answer these sort of questions. They're normally found in Help > Search or pressing F1.
