Hello everyone! I am making a 3dsmax hotkey preset to be (hopefully) included as a choice in the splash screen. So for anyone interested, please try them out and post whatever you think is missing or doesn't behave quite like it should.
Download the preset
To install, you will need a more recent build from
Graphicall like for example
this one. and place the .PY file in the
.blender/scripts/presets/interaction folder. After this start up the program and choose "3dsmax" from the splascreen.
The current changes are:
- Max-style selection including LMB select, boxselect and empty-space deselect
- View change (L - Left, T - Top etc.)
- Boundbox/wireframe toggle (F3, O)
- Zoom to selection (Z)
- Snap toggle (S)
- There is no "Angle Snap" (A) in Blender so i made it toggle between vertex and increment snap (which is better if you ask me)
- G to toggle grid on/off
- [ and ] for zoom in/out
- < and > for timeline seek
- X to toggle manipulator
- WER keys for manipulator mode
I think that a rightclick menu should be added later as an extension, but this is it for now.

But I can say that its definetely a good step in the right direction.
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 (verts - edges - border - faces - shell - exit)
Maya
f9 - f10 - f11 - f12 (verts - edges - faces - UVs)
Combining them with CTRL converts the current selection into whatever you want.
Also Max remembers the last vert selection even after you go to edge mode and select edges.
Maya allows you to select different component types at the same time (verts+edges for instance) but thats mostly useless.
Hope this helps.
I think blender will automaticly convert the selection when going between vertes - edges - faces, but every mode is considered an uv-mode.
It's also possible to have all the selection-modes activated at the same time, similar to how you can combine the translate-rotate-scale widgets if you wanted to.
In this context the mouse wheel as a wheel and button are very important to pan and truck around the view.
The shift key in 3dsmax is also a very important concept as it lets you extend or duplicate objects, faces, edges and keyframes.
Just tested this and yes, it's possible to edit the shortcuts even after picking some other interaction preset.
EDIT: as morte pointed out, go to File -> user preferences -> input and modify the shortcuts.
Has anyone tried the current 3dsmax preset? Things like the view navigation and selecting with LMB are already changed. I don't have/use max so I can't evaluate it. Instructions on how to get a recent Blender build and the script are in the first post in the quote.

Thank you.
And i didn't know about the right click change/add shortcut thingy, i was fighting with the shorcut editor and its complex overrides :>

Yeah. Blender Cookie is a great place to start if you're struggling with Blender. Have found some great info in their tutorials.
Changes:
- Automaticly adusts other settings like Turntable rotation, Select with: Left, Orbit Around Selection etc.
- 1/2/3 changes vert/edge/face in EditMode
- Alt+LMB to subtract from a selection (uses the Lasso tool)
Neither is it visible in your screenshot. If i go to the settings of blender to the input section it remains the same, only maya and blender setups.
edit found it:
Its under presets in the upper right corner in the preferences input section. Confusing UI at times this was not easy to spot.
