Ok so this has bugged me for a while but what is the standard procedure for making openable mouths? as far as I can tell there would be several different ways:
1 sculpt it in the closed position and then cut it open when doing the lowpoly, and manually blend the lips with the mouth area on the normal map
2 make sure your basemesh has an open mouth already when you do the sculpting(although im assuming you would run into alot of cleanup issues when baking normals, not to mention if the mouth is open the lips will be in a different shape and form than when they are closed?)
3. ok I thought I had a third idea but its rather late.
am I missing something? can anyone enlighten me?

a hound dog would be slightly different...
either way, id rather bake the lips and hide the seam inside the mouth.
Depends a lot on what kind of setup you're going to have for animating the mouth. Just a jaw bone? Side bones, morph targets, upper/lower lips seperate from jaw, etc.
