Image Viewer

Looking for a free (or inexpensive) image viewer that will stay on top of other Windows.

I was watching a Gnomon DVD yesterday and the guy was using ACDSee to display reference images while he worked in zbrush and Max. The viewer was resizeable and stayed on top while the other programs were active.

I don't feel like paying $70 for something I know is relatively easy for a programmer to create.

Surely in the 21st century there is a freeware and/or open source alternative...

Anyone know what it is?

Hi, XnView is your best bet. I've been using some other free ones, like FastStone, but in my opinion this is the best.

Try a program called deskpins. It'll pin whatever window you want on top of everything else so you don't need to have another image viewer installed.

seconding irfanview, newer version have gigantic buttons though, i use 3.9.1, it's six years old but works just fine

Yeah Irfanview has a lot of functionality. Using it for some years now.
And uing deskpins ..

I wrote an app like that a while back for use home (only one monitor). Maybe I should clean it up and release it.

I've been beta-testing Image Reference for a week or two and it's a really cool little app. It lets you adjust the transparency of your refs, perfect if you need to work on likeness for a ZBrush sculpt. There are also some really handy color picker and clipping features, you guys should check it out!

If you have DisplayFusion (it might be in Ultramon too), there are options to setup buttons/hotkeys to keep windows always on top, so if you have either of these programs already installed, you can use this function with whatever image viewer you like, regardless of whether or not that image viewer comes with the feature.

I used to use this for image ref few years ago. I am planning on using this again for my learning.

This viewer stays on top for good ref for zbrush, sculptris, photoshop, corel and so on.

EDIT: As some of the people here suggested.

I've been using windows previewer for year, I keep a window open on my second monitor.

All these image viewers are great, but is there any one that not only clips your reference image on top of your main work application window but saves all the reference images you opened in a session, and then you can at any time reload all those images again by simply opening up the saved session. Pretty much like a playlist in winamp or itunes of your mix songs.

I really like XnView, but it has one flaw regarding this. Even though you can have it ontop, you have to go into options to activate it, its missing a quick menu option for it.
