Hi,
We are currently looking for a lead character artist to head the department at Ignition London. We are also looking for an additional character artist to join the team.

Overview

Ignition is seeking an exceptional Lead Character Artist. We feel that the quality and scale of our project requires a unique artistic sensibility. We are looking for someone that seeks excellence in their artistic endeavours, but also someone that understands the technical challenges of today’s games industry.
Architectural, technical and artistic skills will be an asset for this position, but most of all you will have a passion and drive for creating work that pushes the boundaries of current game design.

Main duties and responsibilities

Artistic
Ability to interpret design requests and translate them into working, realistic and exciting in-game characters.
Understand art workflows with the ability to modify and improve them.
Ability to interpret the Art Director’s vision and communicate that to the rest of the team.
Have a great understanding of the aesthetics of environment, function vs. form relationships, as well as what makes a character and their animations fun and intriguing.
Proficient understanding of anatomy, and be able to create balanced & appealing characters.
Help to maintain the vision of the project.
Initiate critique of the environment work for the project.

Technical
Production of artistic specifications for their team based on the game design document and concept documents for the project.
Liaise with QA and compatibility departments and aid in devising and executing test plans.
Ensure good artistic standards are set and achieved across their team.
Maintain the art vision and style across the project.

Management
Become the project’s point of contact for character art with respect to aesthetics, technical knowledge, pipeline, and scheduling.
Day to day management of the Characters team.
Work with the Concept team to create art assets for all characters.
Prepare task schedules for the Character team in conjunction with other Group Leads and the Producer.
Maintain the pacing of deliverables for your team.
Monitor the progress of tasks for own team in conjunction with the Producer.
Identify and review task risks and recommend mitigation and contingencies.
Attend Producer weekly catch-up meeting and feed information back to the team as appropriate.
Organise own catch-up meetings with the Characters team.
Ensure excellent communication and coordination between the Characters team and other groups (programming, level design, design, production).
Organise regular appraisals, review and objective setting for animation team, according to system set out by the Producer.
Recommend training requirements for their team.
Assist with recruitment and selection of staff for their team.
Have the ability to teach and to be taught.
Ability to communicate on a wide range of issues and work well in a team spanning artists, programmers and designers.

Team organisation
Implement processes, document limitations and prepare schedules for the project.
Take responsibility for the above processes, limitations and schedules for the length of the project.
Be meticulous and organized in the approach to the tasks, files and storage of the material, and help the team to be the same.
Communicate deadlines and difficulties of the team to the Art Director.
Test and proactively troubleshoot areas that are not working in the game engine and help to fix them.
Be forward thinking and anticipate needs of the team.
Document procedures and pipelines.

Other duties
Make a positive contribution to the team at all times.
Stay up to date with the latest art techniques.
Any other such duties within the scope of the job title and at the Producer's discretion.

Skills and experience required
Have 3 years minimum in the video game industry with an understanding of real time graphics issues.
At least 1 full next gen game development cycle as Lead Character Artist with responsibilities similar to the ones described above and in the Job Specifications document.
Platform experience i.e. PlayStation3, Xbox360.
Have excellent character modelling and texturing abilities.
Excellent understanding the requirements of the animation team (particularly the rigging team).
Excellent understanding of production procedures and software employed in the team.
Good task scheduling skills, able to assign work and monitor progress.
Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and motivate their team to do the same.
Able to diplomatically convince and influence others to their point of view.
Able to manage, plan and organise own time and others'.
Ability to manage the demands of numerous people and tasks.
Recruitment/interviewing experience.
Good interpersonal skills.
Good motivational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication, able to communicate at all levels of the company, to a variety of audiences.
Ability to be responsible for taking decisions.
