Yes, instead of rotation around object it rotates around itself which results in very tiresome navigation.

I'm talking about perspective camera.
Not really a fix, but I've always worked around this issue by just creating a new perspective camera and using that instead. Not sure what causes it, but I've had similar issues when opening up scenes that have a different up axis and didn't know how to reset the camera.
try resetting the tool, via the panel bar *the small menu on top of your viewport and find something related to camera like tumble, dolly, pan and press the reset tool in the tool setting editor. (one of the icon on the top right 3 icons)
