I have the ability to get either as a present. Which one should I go with? I want to use max instead of maya because I think the 3d community is much bigger plus there are more tuts out there for it.
I also I want to know how to use both
Also where can I get spec list to see if either will run on my laptop?
Thanks.

You can download them right off of AutoDesk's site for free.
@Neox, that's good to know, I did not know they were backwards compatible.

I'd go for 2011 myself. A big issue for staying with older versions is plugin compatibility which isn't an issue in this case as plugins for 2010 work on 2011. 2011 also saves to 2010 so you can work with folks using 2010. I think it comes down to whether you want to stick with more tested software.
You will need to service pack 2010. the download from AD isnt up to date. there is a sp and a couple of hotfixes.
it seams alot quicker and stable than the version of 2010 i use at work, could be all the shit i stick in it though, but the newer tools seam better integrated too without the slowdown i am having in 2010
So not only can you open any .max file in 3ds max 2011, you can even save your .max file so that you can open with 3ds max 2010. Therefore, there really is no reason to go with 3ds max 2010.
Get 3ds max 2011!
no doubt about it.
backward compatibility is a feature that started with 2011 and it only goes back to 2010.
Hopefully this is something that they will maintain for the next versions as well.
yes indeed. only max 2010 seems to be available. still its a sweet deal.
edit: The only disadvantage is the watermark, which wasn´t there in the old Student Versions
* Increased memory support beyond that of the 4-GB addressable memory space that is available in a 32-bit operating system
* Increased program performance for programs that are written to take advantage of a 64-bit operating system
so using 64-bit max on a 64-bit OS allows it to use more memory with better memory performance. new PCs come with 4GB memory average these days, workstations with 8gb-12gb average so if you want to be able to use all of that memory you need 64-bit OS and programs
What about plugin compatibility? The old student vers needed spacific student versions of plugins to work, and most didnt have them.
