What tools you use for Environment building?

I'm interning at a small studio right now and atm I'm doing alot of high poly stuff, however, they're going to start building low-poly stuff in the near future. I've done some small game-art assets using mostly Maya/Photoshop/XNormal/ZBrush, but never had a chance to build an entire environment in a game engine other than Source and Unreal. In my free time I'm trying to look up some stuff to speed up my workflow.

Are there any plugins or special tools you guys use for building Environments in (or with) either MAX or Maya? I've looked at potentially Maya Turtle (which seems like lighting?) and someone mentioned to me XFrog. A friend sent me a Koddeshader that I haven't gotten a chance to try out.

On a mini-note, is there a fast-high quality renderer that anyone uses for production? I've use Holomatix Rendition at school for mental ray previews, but the downside is that mental ray in general is slow as hell, there anything similar to MAX Scanline renderer?
