Max 2010 backwards compatibility?

Hello,

I use 3ds Max 2010 on my home computer but will often work on computers that have both 2009 and 2010. I recently tried opening a file on my home computer (2010) but it couldn't open the file (there's no more information beyond "Can't open file _____". I had this problem back when trying to load 2009 files in 2008 (or vice versa) and I can't think of any other reason for the file not opening. So I come to ask if this may be the case?

Is there another reason a file wouldn't open? And if not, how would I manage to open the file on my 2010 version?

max files are not backward compatible they are forward compatible tho. Files saved in 2010 wont open in 2009. it works the other way round tho.

If the file wont open try using the merge command. otherwise the file is corrupt

for transferring most data the fbx format is quite useful .. but jey it would be fantastic if you could open newer max files in older max version (like photoshop supports)

Merge didn't work, looks like I'm screwed. I just lost a weeks worth of work. Damnit.

Send it to someone with 2010 or download the trial and save it out as fbx like rollin suggested, it works. It gets bones, meshes, lights, materials, its pretty good at doing what you need. Technically its meant to be used to transfer scenes between all their apps, Maya to Max, Max to XSI ect...

I know it doesn't help you now but 2011 will be able to save back to 2010.
