Hardboiled Detective Horror

This is loosely for the DW 4.5 - Dreams and Nightmares!! comp over at GA. It has a fairly open budget and deadline, so I'm making it work for me. I was planning to do this character already.

I'm basically thinking of a Lovecraftian type horror. The character I'm going to be creating is a hardboiled detective who's hot on the trail of a serial killer. His search leads him to a sleepy New England town. Unknown to him however was the cult within the town which worships horrible ungodly creatures. The cult wants him dead before he can dig any deeper, and he begins to encounter indescribable horrors.

Here's a basic inspirational image, but it's not what I have in mind for the final composition.

The final composition will have the character standing, back against the wall, cowering before an unknown creature. The creature will simply be a shadowy silhouette on the wall behind him, or maybe not, we'll see.:D

Here's the first WIP. It's just his trusty handgun. I'm close to done with the high poly, there's just a few details left. I think I might jump right into the character tomorrow. Or maybe try to get a solid concept down.

Definately a nice start, you got everything smoothe and clean, though i think some of the details could use an extra edge loop to really make them more metal like and hardedged (first thing to come in mind is the end of the barrel and that area in general).

Looks great overall, cant wait to see it in completed!

The only thing I'd change is I'd tighten up the edge loops around the barrel, it looks too rounded right now. Other then that going great.

Thanks guys. I definitely went and sharpened up the barrel like suggested. I also did some small tweaks to the gun elsewhere, but not enough to bother posting another image.

Got a start on the actual character today, or at least some base meshes to throw into Zbrush. The proportions are kind of generic so I'm going to try some painting over or thumbnails to get a more interesting silhouette and posture for him. I'm not 100% decided on the type of suit jacket and trench coat he should be wearing. I made some variations which I will post tomorrow.:)

    Thanks for looking.

CactusFantastico: Thanks dude, glad you like it.:D

Didn't have a lot of time to work on this today: here's what I got done. I added some more mechanical details to the gun, so it looks like it could actually function. I gave the guy some shoes and made an alternate shirt. A vest instead of the suit jacket. I just now realized I could have both, just with the suit jacket open. Something to try tomorrow I guess. Tell me which one you like more.:)

Tomorrow hopefully some Zbrush, start bringing this noob to life.
