I'm trying to record footage of a game project I'm working on, but my attempts so far haven't been very nice in image quality/smoothness
Ideally I want free or very cheap solutions to:
1- capture smooth video of the game
2- edit some bits together
3- probably chuck some music ontop
4- save it in youtube ready dimensions and format
I've seen a few people posting videos of projects around, so I'm hopeful someone else has done all the research
my first attempt was using camstudio, but I found it slows the game right down when I'm recording
. I found a free editing program called virtualDub which seems ok for the cutting/editing- no idea how easy it is to add the music.

If you want a free NLE video editor, Wax is pretty good. NLE = non-linear edit, meaning you can layer clips, drag them around for timing, etc.

well, the editing was fine, but i saved my project and when I opened it up it was blank
so that was a fun hour
ps, fraps was great though. I don't know how I screwed up in wax..
I can testify that Sony Vegas is a really great editor, I've used the Pro version a ton. Very versatile and solid. They have a simplified "consumer" version, haven't tried it tho.
