ahem...
( before there were soft selections in Maya )
clay_dough.mel
A mel script for automating Maya deformer setup to
emulate interactive Magnet fall-off assignment.
Since Soft Selections were introduced,
I still find it's handy every now and then.
Fer example, a quick way to set up a wire deformer sculpt...
This was my first real project learning mel( 2001 -2002 ) so the spaghetti code is worse than I usually do.
So umm...
don't be reading it.
Cuz umm..
it's like embarrasing and stuff.

Here is another solution(video) by Steven Roselle's Maya blog @ the area:
http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/stevenr/symmetrical_modeling_tips_and_tricks
The last time I met Steve in Baltimore, he actually gave me the idea.
( His desire to one day see all of Maya's tools reflectable ).
So I am hopeful Autodesk will implement as much someday.
Most use this instance solution as well
( considering it is the method used by SubD Proxy )
but there r a few issues that irked me...
( distracting hard origin seam, freeze transforms ( cly_oriental.mel) are not
possible without an additional hack, origin clean up issues
( manually doing it iz a chore ))
Otherwise

Issues with this reflection script include...
Origin edge lamina if edge extruding along the origin
( don't do that ).
As well as the ton of history created with the automirror option on.
( flush when needed )
The Auto Mirror option which gives the tool reflectivity
functionality uses a scriptjob.
( I sweat scriptJobs, so u don't/shouldn't have to )
Thanks for the ideas!
