Max 2009 confusing textures when scene gets complex

I'm working on a semi complex scene with about 17 shaders, each with diffuse/normal/spec in Max 2009, and displaying in dx/high quality mode. When I'm creating the shaders and applying them, after about the 15 shader mark, max starts getting confused and displaying the normal map from one shader on the wrong object, and textures start getting warped and blurred in a couple cases. Restarting max seems to randomize it, some are fixed but some new ones have the wrong textures, etc. Nothing seems to be permanent, and nothing changes in the scene between restarts, its just like Max gets confused about which textures link to which shaders.

I have a high end comp with 8 gigs of ram, a quad core and an 8800gt, and the scene isn't really stressing the any area of the comp at all except for the videocard when the full scene is loaded so its not like I'm running out of memory. This happens even when working on individual pieces in isolate select mode when the gpu isn't stressed at all.

Has anyone else had this happen, and is there a way to fix it?
