In this thread I want feedback on my rifle and it will be shown from WIP to finished as time goes on.
Just started today... basic model w/o details. I plan on adding the top and bottom rails today w/ split polygon tool. See where I go from there... waffle mag etc.
Started up my ACR rifle... basic model so far nothing fancy yet. Will add top and bottom rails with split polygon tool later today and go from there.
Looks like a nice start...but should a scope be that big? I mean, if there is some sort of actual scope that looks like that, then I take it back....but its a really big eyesore.
1. redo pistol grip and safety housing along with mag well, it's all screwed up
2. retractable stock piece doesn't exist
3. front sight flip up, i want that
4. waffle mag is fubared. my process of modeling the waffling separately was a dumb idea
5. more space between ejection port and slide + charging handle
6. where the screw is in front and slightly above mag well, transition doesn't exist and it should
7. overall look at more refs for details
yeah i came to that conclusion too, which is it going to be? sort of far ahead to redo it so I'll just continue on but try to make it more SCAR-ish. Purpose is for fun.. no implementation planned. Where is it too blocky, some part I can redo?
A problem i notice over and over in your work is the boxyness. It seems almost like you do the vast majority of your modeling just extruding shapes from a box in the side view. While this is ok for quickly blocking out your proportions, you get in trouble when you've still got this really blocky mesh, but now you're going in and adding all of these fine details. It just turns into a mess.
You really need to slow down, concentrate on how all of the forms and shapes work together, the various curves of each part and how they fit together, and all of these sort of things before you go in and start doing any sort of detail work. When studying the various forms, think of how you should create the individual shapes. Do not try to model the entire thing from a box, stop and think about the forms of the pistol grip for example, you have very clean, precise rounded edges to make the grip comfortable, start with a 12 sided cylinder cut in half to block out this shape instead.
You've got the magazine going as if all your forms are blocked in correctly and you're on to final detailing, when you're missing even the most basic features, the beveled edges running along the front/back, the thiner strip at the back, etc. Clear your head entirely of the small details like screws, bolts, rails, little dials, etc and concentrate on getting the forms of the weapon down accurately, because no matter how many little details you have, if the basic proportions and forms are off, you'll never have a good model.

I am... top, side, front, etc when I need to.
Progress pics soon...

Ok I'll restart and try not to think about details and I'll use the other viewports more often.
Thanks for the help.
