So, being graduated and Unemployed and girlfriendless is pretty lame. So instead of doing nothing, I decided to update (and upgrade) my portfolio. .
So I found a few photos of some really wonderful looking river villages in China and Shanghai and decided to try to recreate it. Here is a mood board.
Now, I did a rough block out with simple shapes to see how I would like to approach it in terms of Negative Space, placement, object size etc etc.
Now basically, I would like some opinions because I'd really like to knock this out of the park. Some things I've noticed, is there is no real background element, unique building/shape or a focal point. So I'd like to try and figure that out in the next few days.. any ideas would rock. I'm still debating day or night. Daytime, I can get some nice pretty blue skies and show off the bold reds and golds. But a night time scene would set a pretty rad mood with the lanterns.. aah! Decisions. More to come..
Anyways. I posted this early on to keep me motivated, get critiqeed and not fall back. My dad always told me, doing nothing is the most dangerous thing a man can do.

I know you followed that picture pretty heavily, but a lot of the rooftops are too similar in height, I'd try adding a bit more variety in that to break it up a bit so we don't just get a giant portion of shingles.
I'd add a matte painting in the background with a mountain on the right hand side, like your bottom right picture.
Also add something into the foreground like overhanging tree branches, etc. This will create more depth to your image.
Hope that helps, looking foward to seeing where this goes.
Oh, and do both day and night
@zilk: Yea, there will be more lanterns.. probably and variety. My friend is chinese and hung out there this summer and took a crap ton of pictures and boy do they love their lanters, and the colors Red and Gold.
@Jeremy: There will be windows coming out the ass. ;-)
I know it's not much now, but I'm sure there are problems that I could address along the way of placing the rest of the props so any help and critiques will be appreciated. But hell, At least I got it in there and am getting the hang of it.
np mate, theirs actually quite a few of us Unreal Engine guys lurking about on here, if you got any questions feel free.
