Character Modeling Demo Reel for 2010

Well, just finished reworking my demo reel for the new year a few weeks ago.
So far haven't had too much luck with sending out applications yet; a far too common a story as of late sadly.

Please feel welcome to post any feedback and critiques on the demo that you want.

Thank you!

Your demo reel is amazing. However; you do need to take the SS of each model with their UV mappings and details on how you accomplished it. So they would know that you really know how everything works. This is my opinion on your work.

Letsee what Pros have to say on this.

Great reel! Here are my crits:
-You should put the aztec golem+robotic empress part at the VERY beginning of the reel! Right after your info. Put the screenshots/stills at the end. You want to draw your employers eye to your reel as soon as possible! Good job on animating it too! That's definitely worth extra points.

    - Dean Winchester. I love the show with a passion. The character is well-done. However, the bad thing about putting something that's not 100% from your own mind, is that people can relate and immediately criticize it since they've seen it before. For example, say I decide to model spider-man. Everyone has seen the movies/read the comic books, so they'll immediately notice if something isn't identical to the movie/comic book. That is the case with the Dean Winchester you've modelled. The character himself you modelled looks great. Unfortunately, it looks nothing like the guy. I recognized the car, not Jensen Ackles himself.

    - Your robot chick that comes after the Chevy Impala (awesome car btw). Looks good, except for the fact that you used a 4k texture map. That is MASSIVE! I understand the camera gets real close and all, but 4k? I'm still pretty new to the CG world, but that is a HUGE texture. Look at it this way, a 4k texture is equivalent to 16x 1024 maps. Yeah. 16. Perhaps downscaling it to 2048?

Just my two cents! Hope they helped!

Apart from that, your reel is great! Keep up the good work!

Pretty much my exact thoughts on that one.
I'm really only going to critique you on him, because its the thing that hurts you the most. Likenesses are a great way of testing someones ability to match a realistic concept. Both require a eye for reproducing the big details, and the little details that make up a character. When i look at your model the big details(the mesh) doesn't remind me of the actor. If the mesh doesn't cant tell me who he is then how would you expect the little details to?

For now i'd leave it in(i'm guessing this is for GDC) and in the mean time post up a WIP page here and remake him with the help of polycount.

Always remind yourself that your work has to meet the quality bar of the people who have jobs at the places you apply at.

Hi everyone thank you on the feedback!

Prophecies: Your the second one to say that I should move the Golem Scene to right after the beginning info so I will definitely try that out and see how it looks. And 4k for the Red haired girl was too big. Chances are there would have been little difference if I used a 2k for her but this was back when I was still learning in school and I wanted to try painting a 4k and see how that affected the project.

Prophecies/ TheGodZero: With all the Dean Critiques Supernatrual must be becoming a more popular show recently :) Back when I posted both the Impala and Dean WIP Threads I usually got about one person who actually knew that Supernatural was a TV show.

I'll certainly take another look at him but if just looking at the Zbrush sculpt it looks like the guy (mostly, from the front and side, 3 quarter could use some work still). Well, at least more than the final version. Being a likeness and a low/ mid poly its always going to have some of that uncanny valley look.

Sampson: Oh and the music for the Golem was taken from the second Prince of Persia game (Warriors Within) and is called Attack at Sea.
