2D Sketches

Welp, since I finally got my tablet, I can begin practicing drawing...

However, I realized I'm really horrid at it. So please, any crits or comments you can make feel free to post!

use bigger brushes at the beginning stages of painting, draw something not abstract, start with a sketch.

its hard to critique with these posts, because I'm not entirely sure whats going on.
Looks like you're going for a fire effect, in which case, you're getting a lot of "stringy-ness" that doesn't really make sense.
    Try thickening up your brush.

The other thing is that you have a bunch of soft edges on things that i don't know you mean to.

Maybe you can post a reference image, or write a little more about what you're trying to achieve.

Lol, thank you Saso :) That makes me feel a bit better. Never having taken any art class or such myself, I'm rather flying blind here...

As for my concept, I was loosely following a speed painting... tutorial i guess you would say, by Levente Peterffy.

I'll try using larger brushes next time.

Here is my first attempt at shading, for some reason I decided to do some kind of organic onion thing...

I'm not sure if I'm getting better or worse...

This is supposed to be a passage through a gnarled forest in which you can see a clearing...

I seem to be scared of using larger highly defined brushes, it seems to me as they stand out too much... :S

Start simple... i think you should get a sketchbook thread and work on studies...

    - ignore colour... get used to your lines and brushes... get paper and biro even
    - do not start by drawing from mind... draw from life!

I think that is the best way.... then learn values and colour once you know you can draw what is in front of you... learn how to colour it like it is in front of you.

Only when you got the life drawing... and this will take a decade+ (it did me)... will you be able to convingly be able to draw non abstract stuff from the mind.

Conceptart.org will have a lot of pointers, inspiration and tutorials for 2d painting.

That is my 2 euro cent

Thanks for the replies. I have been trying to ignore color recently. I rather work with my tablet, but if working with pen and paper would be better, I can do that as well.

I suppose it's time to finally get an account on conceptart.org finally ;)

Eh, I went against your advice and drew from imagination again -_-

I'm attempting to create some posters for school in photoshop, and am working on some samples. Not exactly knowing what I should draw for the school, I thought of making an arched tree that hung over a path and looked apon... the path to success? xD

Anyway, only the tree so far... Large resolution as well, so you can nit pick all my mistakes :)

Paint a still life. Get some random items from your desk. Put them together and just draw them. For finding a proper framing of the still life you could take some fotos. This usually helps to find interesting compositions.

As said above focus on greyscale and shading first. Also you might try the following:

Ignore the transparency settings of you pen for now. You can use your pen pressure for controling the size of your brush. Adjusting the transparency can be effectivly handled by the numpad. This will help you to get sharper paintings. Atm everything seems very blury.
