is there a way to change the default settings for primitives in 3ds max? for example, change the number of segments in a plane from 4x4 to 1x4...just curious

Stupid thread title. Could you try using something more descriptive next time?
One way is to make a quickie macroscript for the primitive you want, using the # of segments you like.

Sorry if I came off as a bit rude, bad thread titles are a bit of a pet peeve.
If you do a search you might find the other thread about making custom primitives, IIRC there's a plugin or a script that lets you do this easily.

So that makes for two pet peeves, Eric?
Eric is entirely right though, next time search first, and then start a thread with a descriptive title.
