Heh, I stared at it for 30 seconds thinking it looked like some sort of sci fi gun. Then it clicked and I realized it was just the wheels. Looks great so far. Only crit is to keep in mind the kinds of details that will bake down to a low poly well so that you can keep a reasonable polycount.
not really too one specific ref. i have a tone of refs im using.
im getting some wierd shadows from some light. it would take too much time to fix. this is still a wip, so i figure its ok to have some errors here and there. u get the idea.
lol, it was just a few hours since your post...chill!
It looks like a great start. The detail for the wheel area is very nice!
Everything else is looking good too....I think at this point its too early to give too much critique...I can't come up with anything that can be improved upon yet.
My only crit about the wheel area is that with all that detail it's either going to be a lot of tris(especially considering duplication) or take up a large part of your texture space to get the normal details to come through. And since its such a small part of the locomotive overall you might want to consider removing some of the smaller details.
I could be completely wrong though and you could make it work, just looking at it though that's what runs through my head, can't wait to see the low poly.
I was going to make a pun about the bogey in the 1st post, but thought better of it.
The silhouette of of the larger parts looks very low poly compared to the components, without seeing the train ref you're using, it's difficult to tell if it's the design or not, but certainly the larger panels could use some seams, right now it looks like the cab was injection moulded as one giant solid chunk of plastic.
Is the original train metal? I know a lot of the newer trains are often large single chunks of fibreglass, but as an older looking train, I'd imagine this was constructed with a lot or panels?
looks cool so far-I can tell you put a lot of love into the wheel mounts; it would be nice to see that level of detail throughout the train. I would say something more, like the scoop would look cool if there where some insets/holes or what not have you, but I am not sure whats finished, and the no reference thing again. Still, looks very cool!
lol! I'd heard of Airforce one, but not trainforce one.
Could do with some higher res ref though, you can barely make out the detail on that
Here's a bigger one, you can make out all kinds of cool detail on the front :
You gonna keep the GWB paint job too?
Edit- here's another , better angle on the front. I'd suggest tweaking the nose- if you're aiming to make this actual locomotive, the nose looks totally different in shape to your ref :
You're using the ref as loose reference right? There are quite a few areas that are off. Don't get me wrong its a great model and some damn fine modeling it's just not matching the ref and I don't know why that is.

Exactly what I was gonna point out. As JohnnySix mentioned above, it's pretty much the nose, it looks completely different from the ref. It's definitely not looking bad, but depending on the level of resemblance you want to achieve it's something you'll have to look at. If it's just loose reference though, congratulations, I'll definitely subscribe to this.
The low poly model is giving me some trouble. The wheels are a bitch... and im having a real hard time putting it all on one texture map. Think ill do two instead. Anyhow, I just felt like posting for some reason. lol
ok, im finally done wth the main texture map for the train. the wheels will have to wait till later.
anyhow, im very pleased with the way it turned out. here, i am applying the AO map as diffuse and also the normal maps i baked. Im rly glad its over. lol
I think the texture looks pretty good for the most part. My first instinct is to say dirty it up more, but that might be overkill. I think just adjusting the white stripe along the side to be a little faded/tan might help.
I wouldn't call it finished...you have green and white windows :poly124: haha.

Looking foward to seeing this progress!

No crits from here..
now go texture it! :>

(its gonna be a 1024x1024 in the end. im just workin in higher resolutions for now...)

i did one of those for trainz 2009 or something
its on the cover :O

anyhow, here is the diffuse so far. Would you guys call that finished? or does it still need stuff?
