Hi everyone. For this coming year at school, I've decided to work on a complete environment and characters (and hopefully make it some sort of super-simple mod?) using the UDK as a base. I will probably get help from some programmers later on so they can help me setting up the mod itself (seeing how characters won't move like the UT ones, and weapons won't be anything like those either).
Anyway, this will be a first for me, and even if I'm not able to make it all into a simple game, I will be more than happy enough if I at least get a good looking environment and some characters, weapons, etc... modeled and textures.
As I said, this will be a first for me, that means that I've barely worked with normal maps and other stuff. I played around with the UnrealED back a few years ago when it was the UnrealED 1.0 (UT99) and 2.0 (UT2k3/2k4). I've played around a bit with the current UDK and a couple weeks ago I gave all this a try making a simple prop (oil drum, they are in every game!) and texturing it. It's a bit bland, but hopefully I will get better and better at it!.
Now, for the project itself, the settings will be something like this:
- Set in 100~200 years from now in another planet.
- Based on north India architecture (ie, Saijalmer) but not nearly as detailed (or I could spend my whole life just building this level) mixed with mechanical stuff everywhere.
- Main environment will be two buildings. First building will be some sort of palace, the second will be a military building attached to the first one.
- Two teams, the 'defending team' (need a name) which will be the native soldiers, and the 'attacking team' (need a name too) which will be a Nazi-like army that goes around conquering planets.
As you can see, I've set up quite a bit to do for just one person, so because I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it all and complete the game in time, I will try to work on each prop and stage-area for long enough so I can show them as just renders and have them look good enough to put on my portfolio.
I have uploaded a couple images to my blog so I will just link them here.
The first one is a sketch of the 'attacking team', which right now looks a bit too much like the Killzone 2 and Jin-Roh soldiers, so I will need to fix.
I will go with something similar to the bottom-left concept but with a much better helmet, haha.
And here is the prop I made to try out how it would look in UDK. Right now I think it looks TOO clean, but I don't want the game to actually look very dirty either.
Today I will start with one of the 'open' areas in the environment (including simple drafts and sketches for the props), and I'm fairly sure I will probably do a lot of stuff wrong, so I will keep posting it here and hopefully I can get some comments from you guys!. I would ask my teachers, but today I don't have class and I just can't wait any longer to begin this project :P
So, go and be as critic as you can. I will really appreciate any help I can get from all you.

other than that, nice work looking forward to more
I'm working right now in some sketches for the part I want to make today. I also have some top-view drafts of the overall environment but it's so simple I'd feel embarrassed if I posted it here :P
