i like it!and its epic if you have only been doing 3d for 6 weeks!
a couple of things though, the pipe vent thingy on the back doesnt look right, it looks all crumpled and broken, and you can lose about half the polys maybe a bit more on it too.
Also the distribution of your polys is a bit off balance mainly with those other epic looking pipes, id say either take out polys from the pipes, not loads but a few. The other option is to add more polys to the rest of the tank especiallly on the body!
oooh also i dont know how to do it in max because i use maya but there must be a soften edge tool which you should apply the edges of the turrent so they look smoother
but overall i like it
hmmm well the teacher said the polycount can be whatever, it doesnt really matter since we just started taking 3d classes
the pipe vent might look broken because of the angle i hope haha

Heres what I suggest if this is going to be unwrapped and textured then finish making that model high poly and decide what you can bake to a normal map. If your not going to use normal maps then remove the extra edges that you have. For instance the pipes that connect toward the back, the thing pointing up in the back, most of the round pieces can be taken down a notch. After you do that you can then unwrap them alot easier.
