Im looking for a way to export the hard and soft edge information from maya into modo. The obj and fbx plugins have their limits.
Im usind maya 2008 and the latest modo.
Well there's also Collada though I haven't tried it yet... and since it's very similar to fbx I'm not sure if it would be any better.
Modo's hard/soft edge support sucks since it's limited to the smoothing angle value of the material that's applied to the mesh. Or vertex normal maps which isn't really workable while modeling. Though if you are not going to be altering the models at all then maybe finding a way to export your models with proper vertex normal maps on them from Maya would work.
I usually just split the geometry where I want a hard edge in Modo, then apply a material with a 180° smoothing angle.

Sorry I wish I could be of more help
But collada sounds interesting for later projects, thanks for that.
