So I use 3ds max but haven't gotten photoshop yet. I was wondering what people use for background templates such as a human front/side to model off of or was wondering if there is a good place to obtain these? google images hasn't helped me much unless I just cant search properly. or maybe i should just be drawing all these from scratch

http://www.the-blueprints.com/ (you will need the free account to get the higher rez images)
http://www.3d.sk/ (account needed as well but has lots of real human references)
Depending how you word you google search, you might find more with google images. Hope this helps.

The internet is filled with references, but not all of them are set up in the "ready to put on image planes" pose.
When I first started out I relayed pretty heavily on background plates for the first few models. I still do for somethings that must absolutely be 100% precise but thats pretty rare.
When I need ref I'll have it up on one monitor and model on the other. For a lot of things I don't even bother having ref up as I know the object pretty well or is something that can come together in the scene fairly easily.
Its true I do suck, I just happen to suck less then some other people (who will remain nameless because there isn't enough space to list all of you little people) =P
Err wait... I'm a GD art god and ya'll know it!
Its probably because I don't use enough literal reference and I use it just for inspiration. But honestly I suck because I care too much...
world peas!
