Alpha Channel Targa Tutorial

So alpha channel transparency in tga's seems to be the standard, and i found a tutorial that explains it okay

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li5AWYxIurw[/ame]

but this tutorial lacks a major thing i need,

if i'm making something in photoshop, over a transparent background, with semi transparent edges (with tablet) how do i select it and make the alpha channel, the way he does it its an on or off thing, since hes using the magic wand.

Hide any layers that you don't want to be a part of your alpha (anything that isn't transparent, like the Background layer) and press Ctrl Shift Alt E. This will make a new layer that has everything visible in it. Ctrl-click the layer thumbnail to make its alpha into a selection, then make a new Alpha channel with it. Just delete that new layer when you're done, since it's extra and usually gets in the way. Does that make sense?
