Hey everyone,
I'm trying to sculpt some engravings on a plane in mudbox, I am new to the software and was wondering how exactly i would get around to do this.
I'm aiming for something similar to this:
I've got the reference set up but have got no clue on how to actually start this. I don't want to import the image as a stencil or imprint it onto the mesh, just want to get some practice doing it manually. Also is it possible to get the crisp/hard edges in mudbox? Thanks!

Nevermind, just saw your text under your image.
So yeah, if you don't want to use a stencil, freeze your geometry!
In the second part of the DVD, Riki spends something like 90mins sculpting 4 or 5 parts like this in Mudbox and Zbrush using stencils as a base.
Its pretty awesome.

All this time I didn't understand exactly what was happening with the fall offs until I just saw that image. I heard it explained countless times but never shown like this. Thanks Man!
I agree about the stencil idea btw. Also, if what you are trying to make is very repetitive you could also high poly model it and capture it as an alpha 32 bit displacement. Wayne Robinson covers this in one of his Quick Start Series in Mudbox, but I can't seem to dig it up.
