I don't think he's talking about the pixellation of the details, I think he's talking about the long greyish streaks along the surface?

So yeah, aa and texture space are important factors here. AA can only do so much without ruining the details when you have too little texture space, but if you haven't tried it yet, that'd be a first step.

I assumed the grey streaks were my screen/compression.
Anyway, it would help if the OP could be more clear.

Given the smooth look, it just looks like another piece of geometry in the scene to me. And it's not subtle. I like the sound of artificats though.

2. does the surface appear smooth on the normalmap itself, or does it look like it contains the barely visible artifacts too?
