My First day in-house was bizzare, I showed up at Fuzzyeyes studio carpark and saw cars parked into the carpark haphazardly, walked into the front door and saw dead cockroaches on the floor, a beaten up vending machine, mum joke cartoons of various team members mothers drawn on the wall etc etc, aluminium foil on the windows ( we had no airconditioning in the 35 C Brisbane summer )
20 or so computers and desks jammed into a room not much bigger than your average single size garage.
Yet everyone was jovial, happy and generally pretty easy to get along with.
My computer was a Pentium 3 700 mhz with 512mb of ram. ( this was only 3 years ago btw ) when the current top of the line PC was up around 2 ghz And we were tasked with building 'next gen' several million poly sculpts for normal mapping purposes.
First day at Crystalised they were doing a Mo-Cap/Voice acting test in the foyer. For most of the day all I could hear was this guy shouting lines like "Get your damn ass over here so I can spank you!" Lord only knows what the neighbours think we're doing in there.
my first week at frontier games I took a shortcut through the fence of the science park( which someone had cut open because there was no shortcut) to the supermarket and the fence wire is deceptively low.
caught my head on the sharp wire and nearly tore my scalp off:)
later in the week some of the guys , including the lead were playing football in the car park and the ball came my way.
Trying to be cool I was determined to head the ball back, but as I climbed higher in the air it turned in to a backward diving leap on to the concrete.
Suffice to say i was n't there at the company very long. bad karma or something

HAHAHAHA man thats the funniest thing I've read all day BECAUSE we used to play football in our carpark and we had a guy come raging out of the office and into our game, with a flying header which ended up him crashing onto the concrete carpark in a crumpled heap... I thought it was hilarious then as well... he wasnt bleeding out or anything so we just caried on with our game after we spotted in amongst the tangle of limbs a thumbs up.
I found the biggest, meanest looking dude at the company and beat the living shit out of him. That way I didn't have to worry about anyone trying to make me their bitch. True story.

Those where surely the days.
Wow I remember that! So hot in that place!
I remember fearing the aircon that spat sharp black ice everywhere, and dripped water on the powerboards. Yeah I was pretty nervous! :P
Dont worry, after about a week you should have the place sussed. Good luck!
Not really an anecdote about the first day working but the first interview I had for an internship as an artist. I showed up wearing a full business suit, fancy shoes and tie... I got 'hired' and a lot of ppl called me 'boss' for the first month hehe :poly124:
Then at another studio people were walking in with a keg of beer while I was being interviewed... BEST ICEBREAKER ever! :poly142:
At yet another studio I was kind of surprised to be sitting across a female LARPer, I never really heard too much about it before but she was scaaary :poly122:
its always the same here, coming too early (usual the right time, but co workers come late) and wairing in a chair for an hour or so and then geting my first task
New modeler started here 3 days ago, it's his first job ever too.
He gets brand spanking new PC - that has some memory timing problem. Machine fails to boot up even, and for days on it keeps resetting, no matter what the sysadmin does to it... and it'll take a few days to get replacement parts.
Oh, and the client for the new project still haven't sent any material we could work with, so I can't even give him a proper task.
Poor guy must think we're cheap and/or bigtime lamerz or so...
I was hired at Cave Dog/Humongous right when GT interactive decided to shut down the QA department and lay off most of the Cave Dog staff.
They took everyone off site for a company meeting, as people checked in they separated the cattle into two conference rooms. Conference room B, was given a number to call, to schedule a time to come pick up their personal effects...
I was called the next day and told they had an opening in tech support if I wanted it but that Cave Dog was gone. Arrg... So close...
First day at Concrete Games (R.I.P & *Tear*) I was mostly excited, and bored because I had to read the GDD all day...for a game that never saw the light of day. Standard operating procedure.
Looking at all those stories I feel lucky. In my case, my first task was to play the game all day so I would get familiarized with the product. Short and simple.
