It's a movie and video game, people are going to the sites to expect flashy design and explosions and dumb stuff like that. Whereas with a portfolio, community, or informative site users are more likely to desire a quick and easy to access site. It's all for show.
A better question is: why are you going to an official product site of to get information? What is this, 80's AOL? That's the worst place in the universe to look. Officials sites are always full of marketing bullshit and rarely have anything worth looking at on them besides a trailer you can usually get faster and at higher resolutions elsewhere. Third party preview/review sites are where you should be looking to begin with.
Ceebee, I think no one in the public actually cares at all. Only marketing folks think they care and need to justify themselves ... (and are paid for it too!). Only thing the public wants to see is the trailer.
In both cases it's so obvious that the art team behind the actual project had nothing to do with the art direction of the website, it's painful...
I friggin' hate that shit. And it's not just on official movie and video game stuff either... I've seen this crap used on the official sites of video game companies, too. Like, when I'm looking to check job oppurtunities and more about companies and whatnot.
Has anyone ever gone to the official Rockstar site? GOD, that is the HARDEST site I've ever had to navigate. I couldn't find how to get to the page I wanted, and when I finally did, part of the screen was cut off at the button, and it was impossible to scroll down.
But I suppose that's a bit different than what you're talking about.... either way, can't remember which offhand, but I HAVE seen gaming studio's sites crammed with this over-the-top, painful loading crap on their sites too :P THE MADNESS MUST END!
Strangely these seemed to work okay for me, however I know the feeling when you're sat staring at loading bars or the browser freezes cos there's just too much going on on the page. :poly127:
Having spare HD space and a recent defrag seems to help video/streaming stuff load a lot faster though.
Both sites linked worked fine on my now 6 year old machine.
It didnt take TOO long to load, but Im not really a fan of any flash sites or sites that require me to upgrade and or install a new version of x,y, or z every 3 months just to view it.
why do they ask the birth date anyway
no kid is dumb enough to put his real age and get stuck
It's actually forced by the ESRB, if you want your game rated and sold in the US you must uphold the ESRB so no one under the rated age can access the content. Luckily for everyone they suck at writing age verification guidelines and it works out to be an annoyance to everyone and stops no one.

Yeah, I like that one a LOT better. Entering month year and day every single time you visit a site is annoying as hell.
Doesn't really help either, you just lie, and most of them even make the year list from 2009 and down, so you have to grab the slider to scroll down, since they always make them unscrollable.
What are you talking about, kids don't lie! They never do! They are honest hardworking little monsters, I mean angels and deserve to be protected from the evils of video games.!!!
Flash sites blow, they suck more than this economy and the update made to photoshop cs4 and Max 2010. They suck more than my paycheck. Flash sucks and the ahole that thought it was cool to make shitty tool bars in Max and Photoshop deserves a freaking....

Well try looking at the media -> pictures on the first site, there's a loading screen and a little animation before every image.
Instead I googled darksiders with cooliris

Limited flash used, lots of videos, no transitions, good deal of info that people actually care about.

Pretty sure it's just to cover their asses legally by saying they took a precaution to keep kids out.
Yeah I loaded the Darksiders site earlier and it took a very long time to load, I was really surprised by the time the bar hit the end.
Can't they just do the porn thing, "are you 18?"
