where cna i find free tuts on procedural texturing for max. im talking about using the shaders and materials rather than a texture made in photoshop. i found this gnomon tut that shows exactly what i need.
That's not 100% procedural, he uses photos and hand painting also. He uses a lot of custom materials that aren't included in max from a few different places which may or may not be free.
The standard shaders in 3dsmax are pretty easy use and kind of lame... but you can pull off some good stuff. In the material editor you can click the "standard" button and switch it to something else like ink and paint or matte/shadow. More become available if you switch your render engine to mental ray or VRay.
You can also load procedural materials (noise, smoke, falloff, gradient ramp) into map slots of a "standard" material.
