This workshop will consist of several mini-workshops.
Don't forget.. These workshops are meant to be a learning experience.
They are not competitions. The sharing of techniques and workflows is the most important aspect of these workshops.
With that in mind, you are encouraged to share wip pics, videos that you record while modeling and OBj models at various stages of modeling.Mini Workshop #1
Model the green stock.
We don't have a time limit yet.

I know that you said there is no time limit... But can we at least have a rough time frame? Like, 1 week-ish, 1 month-ish, 6 months-ish?? I gotta plan my life, and all
Get chassis and full rifle side view. Remember they are photos not blueprints.
I get the model is from the AW series, here is a link to the manufacturer, take a look at the nice brochures as well:

Gallery is nice too, images are a bit small but a couple of exploded views can give the idea about how pieces are put together.
Those side shots will help alot
Also the various threads around polycount, like "How do you model dem shapes (sub-d)" thread has been really informative.
Racer's AK47 videos shows the process of making the small details of the guns like screws and rivets and so on using floating geometry for baking into a normal map.
I'd recommend checking those out.

this is really annoying, that site had the BEST weapon ref I had ever seen
That link works for me ...
right now your only concern is about making a sweet hipoly work.
and for that you dont have a budget.
Not sure if this is the one you were talking about but hope it helps http://www.imfdb.org/index.php?title=Main_Page
Firstly the weapon have tons of beveled curves. What is the best way to deal with those? Should I model them in or try to get subsurf to handle them? I would also like some pointers on modeling with sunken bolts.
I've started on this but school is getting kind of busy so I probably wont post anything for a couple weeks [woot, spring break ].
