found this with a google search
"unwrapping tips site: http://boards.polycount.net"
I found this thread: http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=35622
the board search functions are weak sauce, but hopefully that will all change in the coming months. for now, this has worked fine for me.

It has many steps simplified in just 1 tool or button. All you need for basic unwrapping are:
- the big open/Close uv Editor button (don't forget to select the object though)
- Some of the beige buttons like split by smoothing groups to get started
- The mighty iron tool to unwrap a face selection to a single UV shell
- The green ones for getting stuff in shape (relaxing, aligning,...)
after that its pretty much just rendering a wireframe UV layout to the clipboard usingor
...
and opening that clipboard bitmap in Photoshop.
There is also a video on Youtube that covers a more complex 3d model to be unwrapped
