hey, i joined during the time that we were still waiting for the new site to be completed. So, i just wanted to know, what was the rest of the polycount site outside of forums? What was there? i just don't know what to expect wth the new one.
I guess this is as good a place as any to go over the finer points of the new site. I'll do it in bullet points so I can get back to drawing.
A videogame art news blog
Reporting on news from all major game art communities, relevant blogs, news we think you guys would really dig(g?)
Polycount/community news
Fun, interesting technical news we know you guys enjoy.
General 3d art related news. Sexy pics, sweet vids showing new technology for games, etc. etc.
Exclusive content. On top of reporting other news we've also started an initiative on exclusive content: Articles, Interviews, Tutorials and Reviews*.
E.g.: We're jumping out of the gate with an interview with Ryan Clark where we talk about the beginnings of Crazybump, its development phase, working with Polycount and other sites to help it grow, and whats next for him.
The idea is if you favour other communities over polycount, we at least want you to hit us up first before heading on over there since we'll be reporting their news in addition to our own.
A videogame art community (read: forums)
This really isn't changing much from the current formula that we have here. Notable changes are the header system working more intuitively. And if I have my way we'll be able to preview threads inside of P&P without having to load them up. And no, this doesn't mean we're using thumbnails like other sites out there.
So far we've had about 30 people run through the new front end and forums. The previews have been all positive which has been great. We've collected feedback, comments, questions, etc. and now that the holidays are over we just need act on those before we go live with the new site.
When we do go live with the new site, we can expect Polycount to be down for 1 or 2 full days as the database merge will likely take some tinkering. It's best you follow us on Twitter to get the latest from us as we go along.
And for shits and giggles, here is a picture one of the beta members sent me.
Yes, another tease.
This picture is a couple weeks old now so one difference you'll notice once we're live is we're no longer using green-tone images for displaying exclusive content but will, instead, go with full colour.

Not initially, and not for certain. I have other ideas I'd like to see come to fruition that revolve around the idea of sharing 3D and 2D content - but the new site needs to be complete before I can move on to the more pie-in-the-sky ideas.
Speaking of Rooster, I saw that drop ship WIP. That looked sick. Also I'm digging the teasers, but a whole 2 hours without polycount? This is my new forum fix.
