This is a robot. And I'm working on it.
So yeah.
I'm done blocking things in and now I'm on to working on the high-poly junk. All the big blocky stuff is going to be replaced by some hard-surface goodness.
The legs are still very WIP and I'm probably going to be redoing parts of them since I'm not satisfied with the design. I've just been working from tiny thumbnails of the overall shape of the thing, so it's likely that things will change dramatically, at least with the interior details. The general silhouette's going to remain basically the same.
The ammo belts are just there for reference right now. I'm going to be playing around with different methods of getting them to work in the low-poly version once I get to that.

I think the design of the legs is fine (although they might look a little bit small right now), it's the feet I'd modify some. Right now they look a bit like they've been salvaged from an office chair. This is purely from a design perspective, of course - nothing visibly wrong with the mesh.
Also, obviously it's still early days but I'd be conscious of the balance between curved and straight edges. As it stands, the legs have some nice curving edges to them, whereas the upper half seems quite boxy and sharp by comparison. I'd love to see a nice curving flow of edges in the larger upper sections.
Great work so far. Gogogo!
You mention that you're not satisfied with design of the legs. My stab at the problem there, is that you're not carrying the really successful bulkiness of the top of the pawn through to the legs. Maybe making them more substantial/beefy in some way will balance out the design and give you what you're looking for.
Also, I'm pretty sure you have a decent sized limit for this challenge (6k tris?), so I bet you could model out the individual ammo if you maybe make each round a bit larger?
Looking really sharp though.
oh yeah, nice model...
Its might make it look agile like it could jump around, or run up the side of a building.
I´d pay assloads of money for a chess game with those figures...and I don´t even play chess.

You're right about the feet. I was thinking I'd try something fairly functional looking, but they just look a bit odd instead.
The straight vs. curved edges thing is good advice.
DnS:
I'm definitely considering making the legs a bit more solid and bulky; I kind of like what I have going right now, but it seems like they could be a lot better.
Depending upon how I do things, just modeling all the ammo on the belts might be a viable option as you said, but I'm also going to play around with strips of polygons with alpha.

Well, I'm going to be out of the country for three months pretty soon, so I might not be able to enter the next mini challenge, but I'd really like to make the rest of the set if possible. Having something giant and earth-stomping with a giant blade for a knight would be awesome.
konstruct, Zwebbie:
While it would be cool to make it look more agile, I'm purposefully keeping it so it looks like the most it can do is scurry around a little. Pawns have very limited movement in chess, so I want to make sure it looks like it might have a tough time moving around too much.

Um... 'kay? :poly142:
the image i have in my heads is that they are small quick moving (relative) crabs that scuttle across more than stomp across the field/board i.e.:
