I'm really really hoping someone has encountered this before and knows of a solution. I've never had this happen before. Here's a picture of what's going on:
I hit undo, and it goes back to normal, but the saved version is fubar, just like the one on the right.
HALP!?
edit: I deleted the subd history on the subtool and that saved fine. But still, does anyone know what causes this or how to avoid it? Thanks.

This was exactly what i thought :poly142:
Somewhat cool looking bug.I had this bug once but it didn´t look that cool(maybe because it was only a little stonepiece)
I've had this happen a couple of times, though never as extreme or as unintentionally cool-looking as this, and it's always been due to a few errors in the base mesh.
Think of the extra effort it'd take to recreate that effect on purpose....
possible workaround for saving, export the highest res sculpt as an obj, and then load and reconstruct subdiv when you want to start again
