I'm making a British WW2 Spitfire. The plane that won the Battle of Britain. I plan on this model being a portfolio piece. My plan is that the low res be around 5000 polys and to do a high res as well. Since I'm more comfortable doing the low res I've started that first but I plan on doing the high res as well. I plan on using a single 2048 texture map to start and if necessary a second, though I doubt I'll need it.
You can do whatever feels comfortable and yields good results. For hard surface stuff I like to add more details to such models and make a mid-poly model. Then I turn it into high poly and low poly models separately. Like I did here:
Thanks, guys, I'll post wires soon. And I'll fix the curves in the model as well. Thank you. I know that's my main problem with this model, Just trying to follow one main reference. They build this thing with so many variations that it's hard, but I'm trying to go with the most iconic looking one.
I've been doing a lot of tweaking on the model, I've changed the shapes around the wings and lengthened the body a bit. High res is time consuming lol.
looks great atm mate! I like ur smoothness, too bad about the ngon tho! luckily you don't have any problems caused by it! keep up the good work! also I always start with the high poly before going to low, I think it's the best workflow:d but that's your own choice ofcourse:D
Some more progress. Sorry it's going so slowly, I'm working on a couple other things as well. I'll fix the shape of the cowling and then I'm moving on, much more to do yet.
Kjell: What ngon?
The rivets are way too big. Also, the spitfire had six exhaust pipes on each side, since it was a V12 engine. That much is even evident in your reference picture you posted here.
Sorry, the model of Spitfire I'm specifically following is slightly different. I think it's better to work from one specific model when there is so much reference to choose from. And this plane just had so many different models as well. This one is a later model. But it has 3 exhaust pipes instead of the 6 that are on the earlier models. Also I think the rivets may be a lil big so I'll look at that as well. Thank you.

First of all, that wing really needs the curve, otherwise it is just a very fast, and very impractical car.
Secondly, the bulge is quite a distinct subtlety on that plane.
Anyway, heres a great site with almost all the aircraft reference anyone could ever need.
Just remember that there was like a BAZILLION variations on the spitfire, so try to take as much as possible from a single version.
Anyway, good luck mate..
