Comp reqs for ZBrush/modeling software?

This is where I come to be inspired and imagine what I can eventually become -- a much better artist.

I've been using Maya 2009 Unlimited on my laptop [windows xp] for 1/2 a year now. When I smooth some objects my laptop struggles pretty bag with them. Like a rail model [rifle foregrip] I saw someone else do I pretty much made an identical copy. It's 10k polies. Most stuff I make is 10k max but this rail on it's own is 10k!

I don't want to get into a workflow discussion really but my question is that I want to get my hands on ZBrush so I can learn more programs and I gather it's better for character modeling than Maya. I made two characters in Maya, no tuts and it's hard but I guess it's hard in any prog... anyways I have 2.0 ghz on my laptop, 1.5 gig DDR1, 120 gig hd. I is ZBrush more intensive of a program?? What is taxed more, cpu or memory? I upgraded to 1.5 gigs from 1 gig about a year ago, performance increase has been minimal at best.

Also what version of ZBrush should I get, the newest one? And if so what is that?

Thank you Polycount!!!

Zbrush is tough on your system, BUT on my system it can handle more polies than in Max. I can get a good 10 million+ in Zbrush on my crappy PC (I've never had a reason to go past 40 million on my good one, but it handles 40mil without a lag). If I put these parts in Max though, my pc cries haha. Expect more polies out of zbrush, but don't expect to get it back into Maya without issues. I usually just scuplt in Z, and use Xnormal to bake, then I dont have to place the Hi Poly in Max at all...

I have a seven year old laptop, 3 ghz single core, 512 ram, and a Ati 9200m 64mb
and I still am able to push about 500,000 tris in maya without alot of lag,
and up to six mil in zbrush. im told a bit more ram will help with z brush, but with a better gpu would boost my computer up like a beast.
best bet is more ram, especially with zbrush. zbrush does an excellent job of using your memory to its full capabilities, but the more, the merrier.
    Here for 3.5 trial.
see how it runs first before making any decisions.
