Hallo all,
I have finished a maquette
This one was an old concept I did years ago, but still quite liked. Was based on a sort of weird clay pot that had a small animal skull tied with twine to the top of it. Lost the photo of that pot, but it stuck with me for some reason!
I was rather hoping to put this in as an entry into next year's Spectrum annual, so I really tried to put the finish to it. I still may chicken out when it comes to entering though, so we'll see
Mop helped me take some rather nice photos at least!
Clicky for big-res pics.
And for another tiny sculpey person (with significantly crappier photos, I will admit) -- an as-yet unfinished thing. It's preeetty close to being done, but I'm getting a bit frustrated with it. He'll have a shield and sword in the end, so he won't look like he's snapping his fingers.
Was my first crack at armour, really. Worked out pretty ok, I think -- especially the removable helmet. I'm rather proud that it actually stays on! Overall, learned a bunch on this one, so I might try some braver hard-surface stuff in the future.
Cheers fellows.

so awesome!
The first one, for some strange reason, reminds of a realistic version of the maxx.
The pony centaur is something I've not seen before. He works surprisingly well, perhaps better than the archetypal design given that the proportions of the human arms and equine legs are of a similar length and there isn't the enormous discrepancy is scales between horse and human torso.
That decides it, now I wanna try my hand on some sculpey..
Only crit I have is maybe to break up the dots on the horses glorious behind, with smaller, less dark ones to give it some depth.
But, again, hats off to you sir.
This is going in the inspiration folder, along with your other maquettes.
The Vodun Demon has caused my pants to rise. Pretty inspirational stuff.
These look amazing, as always. Really an inspiration!
Johny, AnimeAngel, ZacD: I work in a pretty conventional way with the sculpey -- aluminum wire armature, aluminum foil buildup. Mix of 2 parts super sculpey to 1 part sculpey firm (just mixed with a pasta machine). Surface detail helped along with Low Odour Spirits (which is a paint thinner generally used in oil painting) and then baked in the oven for weird-smelling goodness. Painted with my airbrush, that I'm still not very good with yet. Really thin things like the Centaur's helmet and Vodun's axe/scythe things are made with milliput, cause sculpey would just break at those widths.
You can see bits of the armature still exposed in the WIP pics at the bottom. Unfortunately I'm rubbishly lazy with documentation
verybad: Unfortunately, I don't think I could get anybody else to have my babies. Us girl folk tend to have to do all the leg work on that sort of venture. I'll prolly post better pics of Centaur when he's done!
Gallows: Dunno, never have, but then nobody's ever asked But if you've got an awesome idea YOU should make it!
Jackablade: Cheers! Funny you read him as being pony-sized... tbh, I think there's some photo distortion in those causing his legs to appear shorter than they look IRL, cause now that you mention it I'm picking up too. Though he's definitely a bit shorter through the front end than most.
OrganizedChaos: You should!
bbob: Thanks! Dunno about that though.. honestly, I tried a few thing with the spots and never really settled on something. Did lighter ones and they just ended up making him look like an xmas reindeer. Not 100% happy with the paint job on him anyway, but it's all learnin' for next time
LoTekK: The helm on the Centaur was a combo of super sculpey and milliput. The horns are largely sculpey (with the tips being plumber's epoxy putty for strength). The body of the helm at the base of the horns are Milliput, which is excellent stuff I've decided, but a touch finnicky to work with. Lends itself well to hard surface and thin things though. The helm on vodun demon is his HEAD. Cause it be creepier that way. Who needs mandibles anymore these days, anyway?
EmAr: You assume it *is* clean. It's ok though. Sculpey isn't very messy.
moose: Thankya! I'll try not to Figure it's best to assume I won't get in, cause at least then I won't be disappointed.
Damn girl, you really are .. wait for it!
Im really feeling weird here, one part tells me fuuuuu, the other is just staring, yet another is deeply impressed.
I dont know how you do it everytime, but damnit i respect you.
Rens: Aww, we buddies! No fuu. Keep up the practicing-- you do good stuff
killingpeople: Better photos? But...but... those ones of vodun man are pretty good! Pic links to an enormous res one where there can be seen all sorts of details. On centaur man (though polycount's doing that ensmallening thing it does when pics are too wide) -- fair nuff... they aren't very good. I'm planning on better photos when I finish him anyway
Wheel: Seriously? I didn't know you can do that! Thanks, I'll have to give it a shot Know if it extends the hardening time at all?
i just shat brickwall.
what he said
Gallows: Cool! Post pics Bit difficult to give suggestions based on not much infos.. you should make a thread with WIPs and I could post in there and maybe be a bit more helpful. How to approach detail depends a lot on what sort of subject you're working on, and what tools you have.
Autocon: Thankee! Vodun man sits on my desk at work, atm
Rens: No worries Thanks, though! Glad you like.
