Most troubling to me at the moment is how to get the "feet" at the base of the object to line up with the rest while using turbosmooth. I've tried moving edges around but it's very hit-or-miss.

Pretty good start though, keep going.
Make a conscious effort to model those things out, as opposed to simply floating them. It's finding solutions to those modeling challenges that will make you a better and more efficient modeler at a faster rate.
