I exported a displacement map from zbrush to use in 3ds max mental ray. But i cant get any of the detail to come through. I flipped the map by -1 on V so its not that. If anyone can help that would be great
you might have to take it to PS and adjust the contrast and the levels. kind of make sure you have a lot of close to white and a lot of close to black colors.

yeah i played around with contrast within 3ds max but it only makes a certain amount of difference

this tutorial helped me get displacement maps working. i think i had to set my extrusion strength to 2.2 instead of 220.
