Hey! My first post on the forum! I was told that here I can get good feedback and crit.
Anyhow, bellow is what I have so far for a drop ship im designing. It will be one of 4-5 rocket engines that will be attached to the ship (design is too hard to explain in words). I have yet to connect the main fuel pump wth the rest of the engine, and will post again when done.
I also want to make a second type of engine that uses an axisymmetric vectoring exhaust nozzle (

Also, since im lazy, I havnt yet put in any screws and bolts. But I will...

Some of the pipes where they are meeting the main part of the engine are not really logical, they just end with no joint or seam. The camera may be pulled too far back to see that detail but that is off the hip.
Nice render!
thx for crit so far!
I use 3ds max. (think i should have mentioned that earlier.)
Making the pipes was a nightmare. The way I did it was by getting the shape I wanted using splines (line), and enabling render in view port wth variable thickness. Then, I would chamfer the edges so that I get smooth turns.
Also, there are only like 3 different piped models in that jumble. I just bent, , mirrored, and moved around copies so that i looked like there were more.
ya haha i noticed that. kinda funny, looks fine though. i imagine an engineer wouldn't think twice about doing the same thing, it's not like every piston on a car is different to look cool
looks good
cool detail man, and sexy render too.
If this is just one of the rocket engines, can't wait to see how aws the whole thing would look ^^
why didn't you use fillet? it gives automatic smoothed edges.
I guess you aiming only for highpoly practice and no low poly, bakes? If not I'm interested waht texture budgets you are aiming for. I'm afffraid much of detail will be lost due to texture limits.
But anyway. Very impressive work.
Edit: oops I apologize for using the word practice in reference to your work.
Otherwise this could be a really nice highpoly asset to break down and render out for your portfolio. Either way it looks like you know what you're doing so you do whatever you think will be best.
But, Id rather not jump into texturing right now. Im still trying to decide the shape of the ship. I was thinking something in the style of a submarine... but wth rockets attached to it. I like the shapes of the ships in the Matrix. So I think im gonna use a lot of those for inspiration.
lol I know exactly what you mean here ^^^
what a pain in the butt to do pipes like those with the spline tool... but from my experience its the best we can do with max atm. One thing that has been driving me nuts for sometime though is if you can use autogrid to create pipes in all three dimensions (could've sworn I did once unknowingly, pressing a hotkey or something to move in the z while creating my spline or something)
I too have wanted to do a rocket engine but have not got around to it. Grabbed some photos of some from the NASA museum here in Houston, let me know if you would like any =D (I'm sure you've got more than enough tho)
